A great stress buster, aromatherapy massage is a sure-fire way to help you relax and unwind at the end of a long and tiring day.
Aromatherapy massage combines the use of essential oils and therapeutic massage. Defined as an alternative treatment, your therapist will start by asking you a series of questions relating to your health, lifestyle and medical history. From this, they will be able to select which essential oil is most suited to you. Once chosen, the essential oil must then be blended together with a carrier oil to create a mixture that can be applied directly onto the skin; essential oils alone will irritate the skin.
As your massage begins, the oils start to work immediately. They quickly penetrate the skin and become absorbed into the bloodstream, loosening muscles and helping to release any suppressed tension you have. As the essences evaporate, you’ll also begin to inhale them subconsciously via your super sensitive nasal passage. These nose nerves will then send messages to your brain encouraging your mind to work together with your body, and sending you into a totally relaxed state, both emotionally and physically.
Generally, an aromatherapy massage lasts between 60 and 90 minutes and you will be expected to de-robe so the oils can be applied. Sniffing the oils alone won’t do the job, so wear some decent underwear if you’re feeling shy. Soft, relaxing music is often played in the treatment room and there may be oil burners lit to enhance your experience and heighten your senses.
After your treatment, remember to drink plenty of water. The oils are penetrated straight into the skin so you may feel dehydrated. Glugging down some H20 afterwards will help hydrate the skin and flush out any unwanted toxins.
Each essential oil has its own specific health benefit, so if you do have a particular ailment or worry, your therapist should be able to advise you as to which oil will work best with your body to achieve the desired effect.
Nevertheless, aromatherapy massage is a great treatment to help you accomplish an overall sense of wellbeing. All the oils have calming properties, which help to combat insomnia, and because so many of them contain anti-inflammatory ingredients, the massage helps to relieve muscle tension and anxiety throughout the body, making for a good nights sleep.
Great for re-building the immune system too, aromatherapy massage is ideal if you’ve been feeling run-down or have recently suffered an illness. It is also a treatment recommended to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as it can relieve some of the side effects including sickness, low immunity and pain.
And if you suffer with any of the following - chronic period pain, eczema, acne, headaches, poor circulation and digestion difficulties, it’s definitely a treatment to explore further.
One thing you should be aware of is that although aromatherapy massage can help regulate your breathing, this is not a treatment to try if you’re asthmatic, as the fragranced steam could trigger an asthma attack. If you have kidney disease or are trying for a baby, you should also steer clear from the potent power of the oils.
