Went here for the hammam spa treatment and was incredibly impressed. Ok so is a little bit of a trek from the tube (only 15 min.s or so) and on a less than glamourous high street. However when you get in, it's fantastic. Staff were without exception really sweet and friendly and hotel is really clean and stylish. The treatment itself was fantastic - you get served Turkish tea and fruit, is all at a lovely unhurried pace and the hammam area itself is lovely (though bring flipflops if you have them as is slippy!) Had a male therapist which was fine though they didn't ask if it was alright (just imagine some women would have been more comfortable with a female?) but he was fantastic - really swet, friendly and did a great job. Afterwards my skin felt so clean and glowing, felt like shame to have to get on the grimey tube to go home. Ate in the restaurnat afterwards which is lovely - almost like another world and not London at all and food was of a very good standard. Highly recommend, will be back, real hidden gem, just wish it was closer to where I lived as could see myself going monthly as such good value and great relaxing, experience...
The treatment is authentic and pleasurable. However, the organisation leaves something to be desired. It appeared that my half hour change to our arrival time, while agreed, had not been noted in the appointment book. This left us with an unfortunate sense of "catch up" throughout the treatment, which is of course contrary to what it's supposed to be all about. The changing room adjacent to the steam room had no secure lockers, but the therapist assured us that we were the only ones using the facility so there was no worry. However, halfway thruough the rub downs in the steam room, we heard the next two clients in the changing room and they then joined us in the steam room! The steam itself was lukewarm and very short lived. The saving grace of the whole treatement was the attitude and enthusiasm of the therapist. Summary: nice, could be so much better.
My friend and I walked from Kennington coming into Camberwell Road from Bethwin Rd. It's not a great area and my friend said she didn't think it looked like an area for a hotel but suddenly we stumbled on it. Stepping inside to another world! We were asked to fill in a registration form / health and safety questionnaire, and given a cup of Turkish tea, flavoured with cinnamon and cloves. We were then taken through to the Hamman area, shown the Turkish bath room and invited to get changed. Having had a Turkish bath in Turkey in November, I checked beforehand and were advised to bring a swimsuit and slippers (they get wet so rubber sandals or similar would be better), but the couple of girls coming in after us hadn't known that, so they were told they could wrap one of the cotton cloths around themselves. We each had a male Turkish therapist who were both very comfortable to be with and we loved our bath treatment. Afterwards, we were led by the hand (slippery floor) back out to the changing room, given water and fruit. There is a hair dryer as we had opted to have our hair washed (some mud left for 5-7 minutes over the whole head and body then rinsed off). We were delighted and then went through to the Turkish/Kyrgyz/Kazakn restaurant for a mezze and drink (Ayran - Turkish yoghurt based drink for me). The restaurant is another delight, with a bridge crossing a 'stream' with fish in it. Food delicious, freshly made. The whole experience was fabulous and I'll be telling friends about the place and going back. As we left, thanking the hotel reception staff for a wonderful experience, I said we were now going back to London... another world away!
I went with my boyfriend as it was a Wahanda offer of 2 Hammam treatments for £30 or £40 I think, and I got it as a birthday present for him as we had been to one on holiday. The staff are lovely here, although they could explain things a little better. We got Turkish tea on arrival and then shown to the 'changing room' which is a room that leads to the Hammam. We were the only people there and we changed and put our things in a locker in the room (although it didn't lock but you didn't seem to be able to enter the room without a key so it felt safe enough). In the Hammam it probably wasn't quite hot enough for our liking, the interconnecting door to the changing room didn't shut fully so maybe that kept the temp down. We had about 15 minutes alone rubbing black soap on ourselves then we could hear voices in the changing room and so presumed more visitors were coming in as it could fit about 4 or 6 people in it comfortably. It wasn't visitors though it was the attendants who eventually came in and started the treatments on us. My boyfriend got the male attendant and I a female. She was good, but you could tell the guy was more the professional. There was a 3rd person, a girl, who was just watching which was a bit weird as they didn't explain she was a trainee or anything (we just presumed) but it would help to just be told by way of politeness. Treatments were the dead skin removal and soap rub, a bit of a massage and then a mud mask. The lady looking after me didn't seem to do it properly as at no point did I get the really cold water which is really meant to be essential in a Hammam at some point! My boyfriend did get it though. I'd have preferred the guy to talk us through it so everything happened at the same time so the lady treating me could have followed him at least. Afterwards we were wrapped in towels and taken back to changing room, we got more tea and orange slices and then after 5 mins were told another couple would be in in 10 minutes! We got dressed with regular interruptions from staff coming in preparing for the next people and asking us if we minded if they brought them in - obviously running late. I was in my underwear at this point so said I wouldn't be long but I had wanted to dry my hair first (I had given up on possibility of washing it already as it was clear there were no extra shower facilities so prepare to leave with greasy hair - at the Hammam in Turkey I went to they washed your hair for you in the treatment). The hairdryer was a bit rubbish and not near a mirror but it worked. Again we were asked if they could bring the next people in so we said yes but if I had been the next couple I would not want to undress in there with me and my boyfriend there (which I said to the attendant). All in all, weird but interesting hotel, nice treatment, friendly people but just lacks the final few touches to make you leave feeling relaxed and pampered. More a functional thing than an indulgence. I would pay £30 for the two of us (that was roughly the offer), but I wouldn't pay full price.
Staff were very pleasant and the atmosphere was relaxing. However the venue was small and there was not a way to enjoy the Hamman and then have a shower somewhere else and get dressed in a changing room. As men and women are using the Hamman at the same time, it is also difficult to use all the facilities.
