Six nail shapes you need to know before your next nail appointment

Published on 2 October 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Round

The simple, low maintenance shape

Short and sweet, round nails are smoothed into perfectly round semi-circles. They’re the most durable – and therefore low maintenance – shape. No need for nail extensions, an express gel mani is all you need for this one.

Square

Good for short nails.

Exactly what it says on the tin, nails are filed flat on top with squared-off corners. If you have slender fingers and narrow nail beds, this shape will be extremely flattering. If not, it can make fingers appear shorter.

Almond

Born in the 90s and still going strong

Guess what? We’re still obsessed with 90s beauty trends. My personal shape-of-choice, it’s less extreme than stilettos, but still quite extra. If you want that perfect almond shape then keep your nails long – nail extensions are best for added strength.

Squoval

Sort of square, sort of oval

Whether you’ve got long nails, short nails, long fingers or short fingers, squoval is guaranteed to flatter. Nails are filed into a square shape but corners are rounded off for a softer effect.

Coffin

Yes, the Kylie Jenner ones

Like cut-creases, baking and razor-sharp brows, coffin nails are an Instagram-favourite. Nails are filed into a tapered point with a flat top. You’ll need nail extensions for this one (to make them hardier), as they tend to break easily.

Stiletto

The nails made for ASMR

Stiletto nails are not for the faint-hearted. You’ll need long nails for this look, so nail extensions work best. The nails are filed to a sharp (no, really) point. Glamorous, or hazardous – you decide.

Heading for a mani or just fancy a timeout? We’ve launched Mindful Mani, a campaign with just one thing in mind; giving you some well-deserved me-time. Just book a mindful mani, plug-in and switch off.

FAQs

Which nail shape is the most low maintenance?

Round nails are the most low maintenance shape. They are smoothed into perfect semi-circles, making them the most durable and requiring only an express gel manicure without the need for nail extensions.

What nail shape is best for short nails and slender fingers?

Square nails work best for short nails and people with slender fingers and narrow nail beds. This shape is filed flat on top with squared-off corners and can make fingers appear shorter if your fingers are not slender.

When should you consider nail extensions for your manicure?

You should consider nail extensions for almond, coffin, and stiletto nail shapes. These shapes require long nails for the desired effect and added strength, as natural nails may break easily or may not be long enough to achieve the look.

What is a squoval nail shape and who does it suit?

A squoval nail shape is a mix of square and oval, with the sides filed like a square but the corners rounded for a softer effect. This flattering shape suits both long and short nails, as well as all finger types.

How do coffin nails differ from stiletto nails?

Coffin nails are tapered to a point but have a flat top, while stiletto nails are filed to a sharp, pointed tip. Both styles require long nails and are typically achieved with nail extensions for added durability.
