This mismatched nail trend was made for the indecisive amongst us

Published on 17 August 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Oh, decision-making. Do I want tea or coffee? Is a fringe a good idea? Watch a movie? Yep, just give me 48 hours to ponder my options. As an indecisive soul, heading to the nail salon is a two-week-long commit to choosing a colour, so when a trend swings by that allows my ‘hmm, but maybe this one’ mindset to flourish, you can bet I’m on board.

For all too long we’ve been opting for one colour across our nails, time for a revolution (a very minor one, if that). Status quo, be gone, Instagram is reminding us why multi-coloured is better. Alternating shades of dark, pastel, or neon, a statement ring finger, touch of pattern, wear your mismatched however you choose.

The trend is a subtle touch of individuality that’s also ridiculously good-looking. Looks great with every outfit (because the more colour, the better), and saves you annoying the nail technician from your 11 minute pondering process when faced with that wall of polish. Decision made – you’ll take them all.

    FAQs

What is the mismatched nail trend?

The mismatched nail trend involves painting each nail a different colour or combining patterns and shades. This trend highlights individuality and makes your manicure more playful. Instead of one uniform shade, you can mix dark, pastel, neon, statement ring fingers or add patterns for a unique look.

Why should you try multi-coloured nails for your manicure?

Multi-coloured nails make decision-making easier and allow you to enjoy several shades at once. This trend saves you from spending extra time choosing just one colour and looks good with any outfit. It brings out your personality and adds fun to your manicure experience.

How does the mismatched nail trend help if you’re indecisive?

If you struggle to pick a single nail colour, choosing mismatched nails lets you have them all. You can combine different tones and designs for a custom look. This style is perfect if you take a long time to decide or want something both unique and stylish.

Does the multi-coloured nail look go with different outfits?

Yes, the multi-coloured nail look matches every outfit because the more colours you use, the more versatile your manicure will be. Whether you choose bold neons or softer pastels, a mix of colours always complements what you wear. It’s an easy way to make your nails stand out.
