This breakout nail art trend is filling our Instagram feeds

Published on 15 October 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

I’ve had a lifelong love affair with nail art. In my teenage years, I’d dip my nails in vodka and press newspaper on them. I was obsessed with the infamous Barry M crackle polish (not to mention carefully-dotted Tipp-ex polka dots). Nowadays, nail art looks a little more advanced. The breakout trend filling our feeds? Wave nails.

Wave nails combine bits of all the best nail trends we’re sporting at the moment. They’re like a softer take on geometric – fluid waves rather than straight lines – with all the colours of mismatch nails and the longevity of negative space nails (if the design is done on the natural nail).

My favourite thing about nail art? It’s the easiest way to experiment with trends, colours and patterns without compromising that all-black-everything aesthetic.

    FAQs

What are wave nails and how do they look?

Wave nails are a nail art style featuring fluid, wavy lines instead of straight geometric patterns. This look mixes elements of mismatch nails and uses various colours. The result is a modern and eye-catching manicure that feels softer than traditional geometric designs.

Can you try multiple trends in one wave nails manicure?

Yes, wave nails let you combine different trends in a single manicure. You can experiment with mismatched colours and negative space all in one look. This makes it easy to try out creative patterns without having to choose just one trend.

What makes nail art a good way to experiment with trends?

Nail art is the easiest way to try new trends, colours or patterns without making a big commitment. You can keep your favourite overall style, like an all-black wardrobe, while adding playful detail through your nails. This lets you enjoy creativity and self-expression in a subtle, temporary way.

Do wave nails work with natural nails?

Wave nails work well on natural nails, especially when using negative space techniques. This method can make your manicure last longer and look on-trend. Keeping the natural nail as part of the design blends durability with style.
