Hair tinsel is trending, and just in time for party season ✨

Published on 8 December 2021 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

When it comes to Christmas (and life in general, if I’m totally honest), I’m kind of like a magpie – if it sparkles or shines, I’m immediately drawn to it. So, when I saw TikTok’s latest viral hair trend – an official revival of 90s hair tinsel – I was immediately obsessed.

It’s uber-festive, majorly *extra*, and the perfect accessory for party season. Plus, Queen Beyoncé herself has worn the look. Need I say more?

      1 What is it?

Hair tinsel (or fairy hair, as it’s sometimes known) is made up of thin strands of holographic extensions which are fixed to the hair. They can be subtle and chic, or totally over the top (in the best way) – depending on the placement, colour, and how many strands are used. If you fancy adding some sparkle and shine to your hair without the need for any permanent colouring or change, this is most definitely for you. Side note: it also goes great with that sequined dress and sparkly manicure you’ve had your eye on for New Years Eve.

      2 The process

There are a few different methods to apply hair tinsel: they can be knotted in by hand, added using micro-rings, or they can be bought with pre-attached clips if you’re after a more temporary look. After washing and drying your hair, your stylist (or fairy godmother, if you will), will add the extensions to your hair using the method that suits you best. It’s painless, pretty quick (depending on the method and how much tinsel you fancy), and no chemicals, heat, or glue are used in the process- meaning it won’t damage your natural hair. What’s not to love?

      3 Maintenance

Hair tinsel is made to last – you can wash, dry, and style your hair as normal, as the tinsel is super resistant to heat and water (hoorah!) Just be careful not to comb or brush too close to the root, as this can loosen the knot and could damage the hair. Take good care of your tinsel, and it could last up to 8 weeks – perfect for adding a little sparkle when the January blues are hitting hard.
      Who can wear it?

      4 Is it for me?

The best part about hair tinsel is that it’s suitable for all hair types, regardless of thickness, colour or texture. Plus, it’s completely customisable – whether you want a delicate smattering of silver or gold, or a full head of rainbow sparkles is totally up to you. BRB, going to get my hair tinsel-ed, immediately.

    FAQs

What is hair tinsel and how does it work?

Hair tinsel is made of thin, holographic extensions attached to your hair for a sparkly effect. The strands can be subtle or bold, depending on placement, colour, and the number of pieces you choose. Hair tinsel lets you add shine without any permanent colouring or changes.

How is hair tinsel applied to your hair?

Hair tinsel can be knotted in by hand, attached with micro-rings, or clipped in with pre-attached clips. You wash and dry your hair first, and then a stylist uses your preferred method. The process is painless, quick, and does not use any chemicals, heat, or glue.

Can you wash and style your hair with tinsel extensions?

Yes, you can wash, dry and style your hair as normal with hair tinsel in place. The tinsel is highly resistant to both heat and water, but you should avoid brushing close to the root to prevent loosening the knots. With proper care, your tinsel can last up to 8 weeks.

Is hair tinsel suitable for all hair types?

Hair tinsel is suitable for all hair types, colours, and textures. The look is fully customisable, so you can choose how many strands and what colours you want, making it work for everyone who wants a sparkle boost.

How long does hair tinsel usually last in your hair?

When cared for properly, hair tinsel can last up to 8 weeks in your hair. Avoiding tension near the roots and handling the tinsel gently helps maximise its lifespan between salon visits.
