This autumn hair trend is giving us all the feels

Published on 3 September 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Look, I know what you’re thinking – in a year full of uncertainty, why oh why would I get a fringe? We get it, it’s a notoriously risky move – it’s also one of autumn’s biggest hair trends (we’re thanking Marianne from Normal People). So, without further ado, we’ve lined up a fresh batch of inspiration. Give in to temptation, book the darn fringe.

Contrary to popular opinion, anyone can wear a fringe (and look great doing it), it’s just about finding the right style. A blunt-cut, all-one-length fringe can look a little harsh while keeping a little more length around the sides is softer.

A longer fringe means more styling possibilities too – sweeping it to the side is always a good option. Then there’s baby bangs (otherwise known as the micro-fringe). They have that edgy feel, especially when they’re choppy or wonky.

The most wearable style? We’d say a layered curtain fringe is your best best. It suits pretty much everyone and is very trendy right now. It’s good to air on the side of caution when getting a fringe cut. You can always go shorter, remember. For curly hair, ask your stylist to cut your fringe dry. That way you’ll avoid any surprises brought on by shrinkage.

    FAQs

Can you wear a fringe if you have curly hair?

Yes, you can wear a fringe with curly hair by having your stylist cut it dry. Cutting the fringe dry helps avoid surprises due to shrinkage. This method ensures the length looks just right with your natural curl pattern.

What is the most wearable style of fringe right now?

A layered curtain fringe is considered the most wearable and trendy style at the moment. This style suits almost everyone and offers a soft, flattering look. It’s a popular choice if you want a fresh update without too much risk.

How can you make a blunt fringe look softer?

You can make a blunt fringe look softer by keeping a little more length around the sides. Instead of an all-one-length cut, allowing the edges to blend gives a gentler finish. This approach works for most face shapes and adds versatility to styling.

What are baby bangs and who might like them?

Baby bangs, also known as the micro-fringe, are a very short, edgy fringe style. They often look especially bold when cut choppy or deliberately uneven. If you want a statement look with attitude, baby bangs might be the right choice.

Can anyone get a fringe or do they suit only some people?

Anyone can get a fringe and look great with the right style choice. It’s about finding a suitable fringe shape for your face and hair type. Styles like the curtain fringe or side-swept bangs can work for most people.
