Now is a good time to clean your makeup brushes, here’s how you should do it

Published on 24 March 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Not having enough time is probably the number one excuse for not cleaning your makeup brushes as often as you should, right? Well, there’s no time like the present (especially when you’re spending more time at home). Here’s everything you need to know.

By Beth Ludolf

  • 1 How often should you wash your brushes?

Ideally, weekly – sounds like a lot but trust us, your skin will thank you for it. If you don’t do it often enough, grime, make-up and bacteria quickly build up (you’re putting these on your face, remember). The dirt can cause breakouts and clogged pores.

  • 2 What should you use to clean them?

There’s loads of specific brush cleaners you can buy but you don’t need to, a gentle shampoo works just as well. When you’re washing them, make sure the water is lukewarm – hot water will mess with the glue and you’ll start to lose bristles.

  • 3 How do you wash them?

One brush at a time – place it under running water to dampen the bristles, squeeze a pea-sized amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand and work the brush into it to lather it up. Work the shampoo into the bristles and then rinse until the water is clean and there’s no bubbles. Simple.

  • 4 How do you dry them?

While the bristles are still wet, reshape them to how the brush normally looks (that bit is important). Lay the brush flat – so they can dry in the right shape – and leave them to dry overnight – or near a radiator if want to speed it up.

During this uncertain time, we’ll be continuing to create the content you love – whether for distraction, inspiration or to give guidance on wellbeing. If there’s anything you’d like to see (or not see) please contact us on Instagram @treatwell_uk. We hope you keep safe and healthy.

FAQs

Why should you clean your makeup brushes regularly?

Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly helps prevent the build-up of grime, make-up and bacteria. Skipping regular cleaning can lead to breakouts and clogged pores, as all the accumulated dirt ends up on your face.

How often should you wash your makeup brushes at home?

You should wash your makeup brushes weekly for the best results. Regular cleaning keeps your skin healthier and reduces the risk of irritation or breakouts from dirty brushes.

What can you use to clean your makeup brushes?

A gentle shampoo works just as well as a specific brush cleaner. You don’t need specialised products; simply use lukewarm water, as hot water can damage the glue and cause bristles to fall out.

How do you dry your makeup brushes after washing them?

Reshape the bristles while they are still wet, then lay the brushes flat to dry. Let them dry overnight or place them near a radiator to speed up the drying process. Drying flat helps brushes keep their proper shape.

What is the best way to wash your makeup brushes?

Wash one brush at a time under running water to dampen the bristles, then work a pea-sized amount of shampoo into the bristles and lather. Rinse until the water is clear and there are no bubbles left for a thorough clean.
