It’s official, smiley face nails are our new favourite nail art trend

Published on 28 January 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Let’s be honest, this time of year is pretty bleak. It’s absolutely freezing, it gets dark by 5 pm, payday was a lifetime ago and I’m so deep into dry Jan, I can’t even remember what wine tastes like *weeps*. When it’s put like that, it’s no surprise that smiley face nails have become our newest obsession. The perfect antidote to doom and gloom.

Yellow is the classic – think 80s acid house smiley – on a natural nail background (ideal for keeping your mani looking fresh too), but there really are no rules with this one. Loved the rainbow nails trend from previous years? Get a different colour on every digit. Go with an accent nail if you’re feeling subtle or mismatch nail art if you’re feeling extra. Basically, do you. It’s meant to make you smile, remember.

FAQs

What are smiley face nails and why are they trending?

Smiley face nails use bright colours and cheerful designs to create fun nail art, often featuring the classic yellow smiley motif. They have become popular as a way to brighten up gloomy winter days and lift your mood.

Can you customise the colours on your smiley face nails?

Yes, you can choose any colour for your smiley face nails. Whether you go for the traditional yellow or mix it up with a different colour on every finger, there are no rules. Customising the colours makes your manicure unique and personal.

How can you make your smiley face nails look fresh for longer?

A natural nail background is ideal for keeping your smiley face manicure looking fresh. This style helps your design stay neat as your nails grow out and is easy to match with different looks.

Is it possible to try mismatched or accent nail art with the smiley trend?

Absolutely, you can opt for an accent nail or embrace mismatch nail art for a unique touch. There’s freedom to express your personality—choose a subtle accent if you like things understated, or mix designs on different nails if you’re feeling adventurous.
