Embracing your greys? Here’s how to care for natural grey hair

Published on 21 August 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Some things in life are inevitable. The sun will set every evening, I will always eat the entire share-size bag of crisps and most of us will go grey. That’s just life. Grey hair has a bad rap for meaning you’re getting old but, unless thirty is old (it’s not), that’s BS. With the right care, silver hair is just as cool as its predecessor. Who needs pigment anyway?

    • 1 Transitioning to grey

Everyone’s least favourite part – growing it out. If you’re not up for cutting your hair short – drastic, but it minimises that “in-between phase” – a clarifying shampoo will help to lighten the intensity of your colour. Add light highlights around the face to give the illusion of fully grey hair.

    • 2 Personalise your shade

Natural doesn’t necessarily mean giving up colouring all together.  High/lowlights can add dimension, glossing treatments are brightening, and toners allow you to tailor your shade. Use a purple shampoo once a week to preserve your colour, even natural grey can be brassy (annoying, we know).

    • 3 Smooth it out

Grey hair tends to be coarser and more wiry (life really comes at you fast, doesn't it?) so needs different treatment. Moisture is crucial for smoothing frizz and preventing breakage. Deep-conditioning treatments are your friend, heat-styling is not.

    FAQs

How do you transition to grey hair without cutting it short?

You can use a clarifying shampoo to lighten your colour and help blend the grey. Adding light highlights around your face also gives the illusion of fully grey hair. Cutting hair short is another option but not essential for transitioning.

What can you do to keep natural grey hair looking bright?

Use a purple shampoo once a week to prevent natural grey hair from turning brassy. High or lowlights and glossing treatments can add dimension and brightness, while toners help you personalise your shade.

Which treatments help make grey hair smoother and less frizzy?

Deep-conditioning treatments are great for smoothing frizz and preventing breakage in grey hair. Adding moisture is crucial because grey hair tends to be coarser and more wiry. Try to avoid frequent heat-styling to maintain healthier hair.

Why does grey hair need different care than before?

Grey hair often becomes coarser and more wiry, needing extra moisture to stay smooth. Special care helps reduce frizz and breakage. Emphasising hydration and gentle treatment is key for healthy silver hair.
