The 90s hair trend Instagram’s coolest girls are loving

Published on 14 August 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

The 90s have an undeniable cult following (and rightly so, they’re iconic). That’s probably why their revival shows no sign of slowing – especially in beauty. Beyonce is bringing back french tips, Rihanna is sporting a whole head of mini buns and the make-up from HBO’s Euphoria has some serious Gwen-Stefani-at-the-VMAs vibes (yep, face gems baby). Obviously, Instagram’s coolest girls are all in. The trend they’re loving? Two-tone hair (rocked by none other than [queen] Geri Halliwell).

Two-tone hair – as well as earning serious nostalgia points – looks great on all hair lengths and textures and is super playful. Go classic with blonde and brown, or mix it up with bold brights and pastels, just don’t forget a bond-strengthening treatment, like Olaplex – two-tone tends to need bleach (and we all know how damaging that can be).

Want to keep those rainbow shades looking bright? Turn down the temperature on your shower – hot water opens the hair cuticles, allowing colour to wash away more easily-, keep shampooing to a minimum (sulphate-free, of course) and apply a UV-protective spray to prevent fading in the sun.

    FAQs

What is two-tone hair and why is it popular?

Two-tone hair combines two different colours in one hairstyle for a bold, playful look. This style earns serious nostalgia points and looks great on all hair lengths and textures. Many celebrities and trendsetters are embracing it, making it a standout beauty trend.

How can you keep two-tone hair looking bright?

Turn down the temperature on your shower and keep shampooing to a minimum. Hot water opens the hair cuticles, allowing colour to wash away more easily. Use sulphate-free shampoo and apply a UV-protective spray to help prevent fading in the sun.

Which colours work best for two-tone hair?

Classic combinations like blonde and brown are always popular, but you can mix things up with bold brights or soft pastels. The key is choosing shades that suit your style and personality. Experimenting with different looks makes the trend super versatile.

Do you need bleach for two-tone hair?

Two-tone hair often needs bleach to achieve vibrant colours or dramatic contrasts. Bleaching can be damaging, so it’s recommended to follow with a bond-strengthening treatment like Olaplex to help protect your hair and maintain its health.

What treatments help protect your hair after bleaching?

A bond-strengthening treatment, such as Olaplex, helps protect and rebuild your hair after bleaching. Using these treatments can minimise damage and keep your two-tone colours looking their best, especially if you refresh your shades often.
