8 hair and beauty looks from the SAG Awards that are now saved in our camera roll

Published on 28 January 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Another awards night, another round of great hair and beauty looks. While, of course, I’m just as excited about recognising acting talent as Emma Stone’s hair colour, it’s important to indulge in fun things on a Monday. Because it’s Monday. Everyone was looking dapper as always (Timothée Chalamet, well done on being you) – but, these are the looks that got me screenshotting the red carpet last night. Nails, eyes, 10/10 hairstyles – here are our top 8.

    By Rachel Spedding

    • 1 Hair accessories

Who wore it: Lucy Boynton and Mandy Moore

While Mandy Moore and Emma Stone were 'subtle' in their choice of hair accessories last night, Lucy Boynton's adorable ribbon was a'top her half-up-half-down do for all to see. Adding a bow is an easy way to spice up a simple hairstyle; lifting a ponytail from 'just left spin class, and everything is greasy', to 'your hair looks nice'.

    • 2 Dramatic eyeliner

Who wore it: Alison Brie and Angela Bassett

Well, a smokey eye is always a good idea. One you can do right at your desk (pre-date, pre-drinks, post-just-got-a-new-eyeliner), just swipe a little kohl pencil beneath your lash line and smoke out with a pencil brush or your fingertip. Alison Brie kept it smokey last night, while Lucy Boynton made abstract, 60s eyeliner a thing. Both winners.

    • 3 Pink-toned everything

Who wore it: Yara Shahidi, Laura Harrier, Emily Blunt

In an interview with Allure, Shahidi's makeup artist Emily Cheng described her look as 'an oil painting, with the different textures and intensity across the eye'. For her dewy cheeks, a combo of Bobbi Brown eyeshadow and clear gloss was used for glow, while BB Crushed Liquid Lips in Haute Cocoa and Cool Beetz were applied to the lips for dimension.

    • 4 Smoothed-out curls

Who wore it: Jane Fonda and Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie kept it slick, and 40s-esque (coiffed by hair stylist Bryce Scarlett), while Jane Fonda went short and springy for her first SAG awards appearance since 2014. To smooth-out curled hair (for controlled bounce), apply leave-in conditioner post wash and comb. Continue to scrunch as it dries naturally, and sleep in a silk scarf (boujie, right?).

    • 5 Intricate braids

Who wore it: Lupita Nyong'o and Laverne Cox

Can I call Lupita Nyong'o queen of all award ceremonies, now? Yes. Yes, I believe I can. Nyong'o's box braids/cornrow combo were an ideal companion to her Vera Wang outfit last night. Hairstylist Vernon François is to thank, taking inspiring from Lupita's outfit to craft the hair as a look too.

    • 6 Berry-toned nails. And lips.

Who wore it: Lady Gaga, Gayle Rankin, Emma Stone

From blue hair, to last night's berry-toned look, the Star Is Born actress has been dabbling with a wondrous colour palette this awards season. We already knew oxblood nails were a biggie for 2019, and after some expert research (me – trolling the web), we're calling Zoya nail polish in Courtney as a good match for last night's look.

    • 7 Properly sleek

Who wore it: Rachel Brosnahan and Mandy Moore

We've been eyeing up Brosnahan's bouncy bob in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel since the show kicked off, but her sleek, centre-partin vibe looked mighty fab last night too. Mandy Moore combed down her low ponytail for a sleek aesthetic also, finished with a teeny pearl clip to top it off (bravo Moore, bravo). You'll need a combo, a good hairspray, and a venue lacking wind.

    • 8 Block-colour lids

Who wore it: Ashleigh LaThrop and Susan Kelechi Watson

One strong, pigmented shade, used across the whole eye to match (or clash) an outfit. Susan Kelechi Watson paired a lemon dress with green eyeshadow, while LaThrop's lids were coated in purple. The easiest eye look going? Correct.

    FAQs

How can you easily upgrade your hairstyle for an event?

Adding a hair accessory like a ribbon, bow, or pearl clip is a simple way to make your hairstyle stand out. Accessories complement everything from a half-up style to a sleek ponytail, instantly taking your look from casual to polished.

What is the easiest way to create a dramatic eyeliner look?

A smokey eye is quick and easy using a kohl pencil under your lash line. Smudge it with a brush or fingertip for a bold effect, and you can do it right at your desk before a night out or a special occasion.

How do you smooth out curls for a polished look?

Apply a leave-in conditioner after washing, then comb through and scrunch curls as they dry naturally. To maintain smooth, controlled curls overnight, sleep with your hair wrapped in a silk scarf for added bounce and reduced frizz.

Which makeup trend uses one strong eyeshadow shade for impact?

Block-colour lids involve applying a single, highly pigmented shade across your entire eyelid. This bold approach can either match or intentionally clash with your outfit for maximum effect, making it a standout trend for special events.

What colour palette is popular for nails and lips on the red carpet?

Berry-toned nails and lips are a top choice for a statement beauty look. These deep, rich colours create an elegant, modern finish and have been worn by celebrities seeking a chic and eye-catching style.
