A handy guide to get the most of your beauty treatment

Published on 25 September 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Whichever treatment you’re heading to the salon for, there are a few generic need-to-knows that could help the result last longer and leave you feeling prepped. How do we know? Because we’re beauty connoisseurs. (…) and definitely spend far too much of our lives in salons. We’ve got quite the arsenal of intel, so it’s time we shared it. Your very own guide to getting the most out of your beauty treatment.

    By Rachel Spedding

    • 1 Do I leave a tip?

To tip or not to tip? There’s only one rule on this – you decide. Only tip if you want to and are pleased with your treatment. Your stylist is sure to appreciate an extra nod to their service, but it’s entirely your call.

    • 2 Speak to the pros

Ask questions, make the most of their specialist knowledge. Which shampoo should I use? How often should I come back? What's the best way to keep my colour this damn good? We can help with that, but they definitely can too.

    • 3 Do your prep

Make sure to do your research ahead of your treatment if it’s something you’ve never tried before. Like exfoliating before a spray tan, removing polish before a mani, or more unusual in-the-knows, like not washing your hair 48 hours before a colouring appointment.

    • 4 Consult the reviews

There’s a lot of choice when it comes to beauty venues, if you’re struggling to find a spot (or fancy switching up from your usual), check out the abundance of salon reviews right here on Treatwell.

    • 5 Patch test, please!

A number of beauty treatments require a patch test as staple. Brow tints, for example. Don’t be turned away on the day of your appointment because you didn’t spare five mins for a patch test prior to the day. You’ve been warned.

    FAQs

Should you tip after your beauty treatment?

Tipping is completely optional and based on your satisfaction with the service. If you feel pleased with your beauty treatment, your stylist will always appreciate an extra thank you, but there is no requirement or expectation to tip.

Why do you need a patch test before some beauty treatments?

A patch test is required for many treatments like brow tints to ensure you do not have an allergic reaction. Taking five minutes to do this before your appointment helps avoid disappointment or being turned away on the day.

How can you prepare for a salon appointment?

Preparation varies by treatment, but common examples include exfoliating before a spray tan or removing polish before a manicure. For hair colouring, do not wash your hair for 48 hours before your appointment, as this helps achieve the best results.

How do you find reliable salon reviews before booking?

You can check an abundance of salon reviews directly on Treatwell to help compare venues. This can be especially useful if you want to try a new spot or switch from your usual salon.

Can you ask your stylist for at-home care advice?

Absolutely, you should make the most of your stylist’s specialist knowledge by asking questions. Whether it’s which shampoo to use or how to maintain your look, professionals provide useful advice to help your results last longer.
