How to get longer eyelashes: Russian vs. ‘one-by-one’ extensions

Published on 11 June 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Lengthy, voluminous lashes, that’d be nice. Good news, there’s a treatment for just that, without the heavy makeup application. Eyelash extensions are the fuss-free addition to your natural lashes, that last up to eight weeks with a little TLC. With ‘classic’ and ‘Russian’ extensions both popular, which type should you choose? We’ve done some comparing, because we’re kind like that (and because i’d like to stop weighing down my eyelids with six layers of mascara). From the process, to the price tag, here it is – battle of the lashes.

By Rachel Spedding

  • 1 Au-naturel (ish), classic lashes

'One-by-one’ lashes, because the process does exactly that: applying a single extension fibre to each natural lash. The number will vary – between 40-100 – depending on how many lashes you already have (and they need to be in good nick, FYI). As for the extensions, they’re normally made from man-made fibres, and come in a variety of curl, length and thickness, so you can properly customise your wink – just speak to your beautician. Classic lashes are comfortable, easy to wear, and will last between 6-8 weeks, if you treat them right.

  • 2 3D lashes, the ‘Russian’ ones

Brow-touching, delayed-blinking lashes – ‘Russian’ extensions are your go-to. Okay, so the level of ‘drama’ is up to you, but folks are sure to notice a change. For these ‘3D’ lashes, extension fans are created, with a cluster of between 2-8 fibres applied to each natural lash. Yep, drama. This means up to 700 extensions can be applied per eye. It’s an intricate process, so an appointment may run over two hours, but the results are ridiculously good, and despite the added dimension, they’re comfortable to wear. As with classics, they should last around 6-8 weeks. Two months of lash compliments, dreamy.

  • 3 What's our verdict?

It’s tough to compare the two – both types of extensions do the trick, your desired result should make the call. For that ‘just rolled out of bed but god damn my lashes are great’ vibe, go classic: a little extra something-something on your eyelids. For full-glam (think hen parties, evening soirees, or, you know, all the time), go Russian. Price-wise, you’ll pay more, but it’s definitely a noticeable transformation. Either type will last up to eight weeks, but you can head for an infill after three weeks, and keep fluttering beyond the two month mark– longer lashes, for longer. Ta-ta mascara.

FAQs

How long do eyelash extensions last?

Eyelash extensions typically last between 6 to 8 weeks with proper care. Both classic and Russian styles offer this longevity, letting you enjoy fuller lashes for up to two months.

What is the difference between classic and Russian eyelash extensions?

Classic eyelash extensions involve attaching a single fibre to each natural lash, usually totaling 40-100 extensions per eye. Russian, or 3D lashes, use clusters of 2-8 fibres per lash, allowing up to 700 extensions per eye for a more dramatic look.

How many individual lashes are applied during a classic set?

A classic set usually involves attaching between 40 and 100 extensions per eye, depending on your natural lash count and condition. This one-to-one technique gives a more natural enhancement.

How long does a Russian eyelash extension appointment take?

A Russian lash extension appointment can last over two hours due to its intricate process. Creating and applying multiple fibres in fans to each lash takes extra time but results in a bold, noticeable transformation.

Can you customise the curl, length, or thickness of eyelash extensions?

Yes, you can fully customise the curl, length, and thickness of your extensions to achieve your desired look. Consultation with your beautician will help you choose options best suited to your personal style.
