Four things men need to know about guylashes

Published on 8 April 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

You read that right – eyelash extensions for men are a thing. Just thank Jennifer Aniston’s ex (Justin Theroux’s eyelashes go on forever), Zayn Malik (that curl’s like no other) and all the other gentlemen endowed with lovely lashes for inspiring men to fake it.

    • 1 1. Work what you’re blessed with

If you're fair, or your lashes just aren't that long, you might want something more natural to avoid looking like you've raided your girlfriend's make-up bag. Think darker and fuller, but without adding unbelievable centimetres to the length. (Of course, if you want to wow with a Bambi-esque flutter, don’t let us get in your way).

    • 2 2. Get ready for 20 questions

Be prepared to get into a bit of detail at the salon. Think about the length, curliness and density you're after before you go in. It's also a good idea to bring a picture of your celebrity eyelash crush for inspiration, as it'll help the stylist give you what you're looking for. (Beyoncé favours mink lashes, to give you some context.).

    • 3 4. You may love DIY – but there's a time and a place

We're talking about mascara and false eyelashes, to be clear. Unless you're a pro, you could end up with spider-leg lashes or lids so heavy you can't open your eyes. False eyelashes are great for the occasional night out – but take note. They're sticky and tricky to apply – plus, you may spot them on someone else’s cheek even after an air kiss. Trust us, the struggle is real.

    • 4 3. They can last up to a couple of months

Sadly, extensions only last until your natural lash falls out. (If we could invent the everlasting lash we’d have bought private islands and packed our bags.) An average growth cycle lasts between six and eight weeks, but as each lash falls out separately, your flutter will thin after a few weeks. Combat with a touch-up appointment every three to four weeks.

    FAQs

How long do eyelash extensions last on average?

Eyelash extensions typically last up to six to eight weeks until your natural lashes fall out. Each lash falls out separately over this period, so your extensions will start to thin after a few weeks. You can keep your lashes fuller for longer by scheduling a touch-up every three to four weeks.

What should you consider before booking eyelash extensions?

Think about the length, curliness and density you want for your lashes before your appointment. Bringing a picture of a celebrity whose lashes you admire can help your stylist understand your preferences. This ensures you get a look that feels natural and suits your style.

Can you apply false eyelashes or mascara by yourself?

Applying false eyelashes or mascara at home can be tricky unless you are a pro. Mistakes can leave you with spider-leg lashes or eyelids so heavy they’re hard to open. False eyelashes work for occasional nights out but can be sticky and difficult to apply properly.

How can you make eyelash extensions look natural as a man?

Go for lashes that are just darker and fuller without adding too much length for a subtle look. This approach helps avoid looking overly dramatic while still enhancing your natural eyelashes. Some men prefer a more understated effect, but for a bolder style, longer lashes are also an option.

Why is it helpful to bring a photo to your eyelash appointment?

Bringing a photo of your eyelash inspiration makes it easier for your stylist to match your desired look. It provides a clear reference for length, curl and fullness. This way, you’re more likely to leave the salon with lashes you love.
