This is why a man should stand by his manicure

25 March 2018 by Beth Ryan

We’re betting it’s not a regular occurrence that the lads invite you down the salon for a manicure, but they’re going, that’s for sure. And the truth is, nothing makes for healthier hands and neat-looking nails like a little trim, buff, and moisturise. Here’s why everyone should make time for a mani.

  • 1 Strong, healthy nails

Manicures mean health benefits for your nail beds. Getting them moisturised and having cuticles pushed back stops them from stretching to breaking point and turning into hangnails. As for polish, if you want to go for all singing, all dancing sparkly glitter, it's a free world. Or, you could skip it and get your nails buffed instead.

  • 2 Powerful first impressions

The first thing you do when you're meeting prospective colleagues or clients is to shake hands. If your nails are long enough to leave a mark, that's probably the wrong kind of impression. Plus, clean and trimmed nails look the part too. Even if your presentation skills are as slick as Barack Obama's and your shirt's fresh off the ironing board, grimy nails can be a deal breaker.

  • 3 A quick fix for DIY-nail

Isn't it true that all you need for DIY is some decent tools and a bit of self-belief? We're with you on that. Except, those hands-on weekend projects often mean dirty, broken nails. Great for bragging when you've managed to fix the heating without calling a plumber. (Really? We're impressed.) Not so great for that romantic dinner that's suddenly come round the corner. A speedy half an hour in a nail bar the day before will sort it out.

  • 4 Adios, ragged edges

Clipping your nails at home keeps them short, which is practical. But it tends to leave sharp, angular edges, which can look rough and untidy. You could learn your way around an emery board to smooth out the corners, or you could get a nail technician to do the job for you.
