The minimalist manicure

Published on 9 February 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

It’s fresh, it’s simple and it’s about to hit a nail bar near you. The minimalist manicure is quickly becoming our favourite new way to mix things up in the nail department. Sitting somewhere between nail art and negative space design (a look that’s been tipping the trend charts lately) you’ll find it offers the update your bored, winter fingers have been waiting for. Stick to pale pastels, industrial tones of grey or even simple flashes of metallic to get the look, and ask your manicurist to leave a section of your natural nail exposed. If you can’t go naked then an opaque nude gives the same effect. It’s this slither of naked nail that makes the manicure magic happen. Combine with etherial midi rings and elegant layered bangles for an achingly cool, straight-off-the-runway appeal.

FAQs

What is a minimalist manicure and how does it look?

A minimalist manicure combines nail art with negative space design, creating a fresh, simple aesthetic. This look features exposed sections of your natural nail, pale pastels, industrial grey tones, or metallic flashes for a subtle yet stylish finish.

How do you get the minimalist manicure effect?

Ask your manicurist to leave a portion of your natural nail exposed for that signature look. If you prefer full coverage, an opaque nude polish creates a similar effect that still feels clean and modern.

What polish colours work best for a minimalist manicure?

Choose pale pastels, industrial greys, or simple metallic flashes to achieve a minimalist manicure. These tones highlight the design while keeping the overall look understated and versatile.

Can you accessorise a minimalist manicure for more style?

You can enhance the minimalist manicure with ethereal midi rings and elegant layered bangles for extra appeal. These accessories complement the manicure, giving you a cool, runway-inspired finish.
