Your beauty routine might be thankful for isolation – here’s why

Published on 19 March 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

The world is a pretty scary place right now – and this time, we can’t just go to the pub and wait for it all to blow over. If you’re not already isolating, it’s likely you will be soon and, let’s be honest, it’s not going to be easy. Remaining positive is key and, while we don’t expect anyone to relish isolation,  there are some (albeit small) wins, in your beauty routine at least.

  • 1 Grow out your brows

If you're pining over bushy brows, let yours grow out. There’s no harm in tidying up between your brows, but that’s it. Otherwise, step away from the tweezers. How long for? Depends on the person, generally at least 16 weeks. Also, remember nobody (except you) is looking at the regrowth.

  • 2 Train your hair to need less washing

PSA: you shouldn’t be washing your hair every day. It strips the hair of its natural oils, dries it out and actually makes you need to wash it more (it’s a vicious cycle). Cutting down on washing trains the hair to stay cleaner for longer. Nobody will notice on your Zoom call, we promise.

  • 3 Scrub off your fake tan

For fake tan aficionados everywhere, life is a never-ending cycle of tanning, moisturising and scrubbing. Now could be a great time for some respite, though. Instead of one intense, hour-long scrub to remove all tan in one go, take your time using a light scrub every day. It’s much gentler on the skin.

  • 4 Grow your body hair

Getting a wax is great (bar the pain), but growing out your body hair can be pretty annoying. It needs to be at least a quarter of an inch long before waxing. That’s about 2 weeks of growth before your appointment.

FAQs

How long should you let your eyebrows grow out?

You should let your eyebrows grow out for at least 16 weeks. It’s fine to tidy up the area between your brows, but otherwise, it’s best to avoid tweezing during this period for optimal growth.

Why shouldn’t you wash your hair every day?

Washing your hair every day strips away its natural oils and actually makes it get greasy more quickly. Reducing the frequency trains your hair to stay cleaner for longer and helps it look healthier.

How can you remove fake tan gently at home?

Using a light scrub every day is the gentlest way to remove fake tan. This gradual method is much kinder to your skin compared to intense, hour-long scrubs done in one go.

How long does your body hair need to be before waxing?

Your body hair needs to be at least a quarter of an inch long for waxing. This usually takes around 2 weeks of growth to achieve the best results for your next appointment.
