Why you should put down the barrel brush and head for a blow dry

For me, the concept of extra ‘oomph’ at the crown of my head is enough to entice me to the salon. Incase you don’t feel the same (come on, that volume), there are other reasons to swing by a stylist for a proper blow dry. Putting your hair in the hands of a hairdresser who knows exactly how to bring out the best in your locks is always a good idea, plus it can last a long while depending on your hair type. From saving arm ache, to sweet-smelling hair, this is why you should step away from the at-home tools, and leave it to the pros.

• 1 Achey arms, no more

  An at-home blowdry is all fun and games ‘til you need to deal with the back of your head. Impossible. Holding the barrel brush in place might build muscles, but it’s a logistical nightmare (melodramatic, me?). Why settle for a half-done do, when there’s a stylist who’d fix it up for you? A blow dry usually starts from around £20, and you get to keep your arms firmly by your side. Unless you’re sipping on a coffee (ahem, another perk).

  Before the blowdry comes the hair wash… Looks great, smells even better. There’s nothing like a salon hair wash for a real deep treatment. Your stylist will tailor the products to suit your hair type (dry, a little damaged, greasy up top). So it’s kind of two-for-one, and we love a deal. I’ll take hair that smells delicious any day.
• 3 Good for a chill-out

  Let’s face it, forced to sit still for an hour or so is never a bad thing. The salon is one seriously zen location. Why not pick a place that offers something extra? From bubbles on arrival, to a cheeky mani afterward, there are salons here, there and everywhere that go that extra mile. You’ll even find a salon to bring your pooch too (and we’d say your pet wants the best for your hair). ​
• 4 It lasts longer

  Look after your blow dry, and it could stay put for well over a week. How to make it last? Keep away from products like hairspray for one-two days after (not that you’ll need them) – product can weigh the hair down, and drop volume. By day four, grab the dry shampoo for a top up. If you’re gymming, tie its back into a tight ballet bun to maintain volume. Or, you know, just don't go to the gym at all…
