We saw ‘orbit nails’ at NYFW – this is why we’re still thinking about them

Published on 27 September 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Jeremy Scott showcased a new nail trend at New York Fashion Week that we’re still thinking about. Much like justifying the purchase of *another* winter coat, if it’s still on our mind, it’s time we tried it. These – are orbit nails.

The trend plays with negative space on the nail bed, circling the edge with bold colours. You may know ‘em as ‘outline nails’ – a look that straddles a conventional manicure with nail art. If you’ve never considered nail art your ‘thing’, this could be your entree.

Scott opted for cobalt blues and neon pinks and turquoise to ‘orbit’ the nails of his model’s on the runway. Our take? Whatever you fancy. Make it metallic, choose pastels over brights, chuck on some crystals (well, with extreme precision); our only advice is this – leave it to the pros to nail it.

    FAQs

What are orbit nails and how do they look?

Orbit nails are a nail trend that features bold colours outlining the edge of the nail bed, leaving negative space in the centre. This style is sometimes called outline nails and blends a classic manicure with creative nail art. The result is a modern, eye-catching look that stands out.

Which colours can you use for orbit nails?

You can choose any colours you like for orbit nails, from cobalt blues and neon pinks to metallics or pastels. This trend is very customisable, letting you pick shades that fit your style. Some people even add crystals for extra detail, as long as it’s applied with precision.

Are orbit nails suitable if you don’t usually like nail art?

Yes, orbit nails are a great option if you’re new to nail art. They balance the classic feel of a simple manicure with a subtle pop of colour around the edges. It’s an easy way to try out creative styles without going over the top.

Should you get orbit nails done by a professional?

It’s recommended to have orbit nails done by a professional nail artist for the best and most precise results. This look involves careful outlining and optional details like crystals, which require skill and accuracy. Leave it to the pros to ensure your nails look their best.
