We asked four hairstylists to predict the biggest trends for 2019

Published on 21 January 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

It’s nice to feel good about our hair. Whether that’s a fresh bleach job that’s got you feeling all Malfoy again, or post-shampoo-scrub after a night on your mate’s sofa. We spoke to the real hair pros – the ones making magic happen in the salon chair – to find out which trends are sure to go the distance. From haircut styles, to new-season colour, here are the four ‘trends’ to try.

By Rachel Spedding

  • 1 Style: lob

Who said it: Khanh Pham, salon owner Mai salon, Manchester

Otherwise known as the ‘long bob’. Hair is chopped to a shoulder-skimming length – enough to the feel the change, without a dramatic cut (or cold neck). It’s described as ‘universally flattering’, and seriously low maintenance. Yes. According to Pham; "the textured lob is still very popular – clients are being a lot braver with shorter, more androgynous, cuts". If you’re considering embracing the ‘glass cut’ bob, this is like the gateway chop.

  • 2 Colour: copper

Who said it: Kate Page, Lipstick Gunpowder

Wella were first to state that copper would be the colour takeover this year (‘Amber Slate’ is a shade born of their new advances in hair colour technology). Kate Page, of Lipstick Gunpowder salon, agrees; “copper and auburn are this season’s colour trend. Rich, luxurious, and versatile to multiple skin tones”. Try a paler peach copper, as a nod to 2019’s ‘Living Coral’ colour of the year, or go full-blown fiery (inspiration here) – your hairstylist can help find the copper for you.

  • 3 Cut: short and textured

Who said it: Jason Miller, Charlie Miller, Edinburgh

One for the brave, sure, but properly short hair is a guaranteed winner in 2019. “While long and medium length hair is popular, we’re seeing an increasing growth in short, textured cuts such as the pixie. It has multiple variations that all complement colour too”. Agreed. Slick it back like Scarlett Johansson, or rough it up, like you just can’t be bothered with styling (relate), it’s a simple cut that looks great with and without effort.

  • 4 Technique: highlights

Who said it: Lloyd Court, Colour Director, Skyler London, London

Colour Director, Lloyd Court, is welcoming old school techniques back to the salon; “Highlights are back, but without the 90's. It’s evolved from the balayage trend. Clients are moving away from darker roots to a lighter, brighter result, that still looks natural.  If you’ve been a balayage addict for the past few years, trying something like babylights can really add dimension and texture to the hair without too much maintenance.” Brown hair is proposed to be big this year, but weaving caramel tones through with babylights will lift that colour just a little. Subtle change, but great.

FAQs

What is a lob haircut and why is it popular?

A lob is a ‘long bob’ haircut that skims the shoulders, offering a noticeable change in length without being too dramatic. It is described as universally flattering and low maintenance, making it a favorite for many people looking for a fresh yet manageable style.

Which hair colour trends are big this season?

Copper and auburn are this season’s standout hair colour trends. These shades, like ‘Amber Slate’, are rich, luxurious and suit multiple skin tones, making them versatile choices for anyone wanting to refresh their look.

How do babylights differ from traditional highlights?

Babylights are a subtle highlighting technique that adds dimension and texture without a high-maintenance look. Unlike chunkier traditional highlights, babylights are finer and help create a more natural, lighter and brighter result, ideal for those looking to update darker roots.

What are the benefits of a short and textured haircut?

A short, textured cut like the pixie offers multiple styling options and complements hair colour well. It looks great both styled and undone, providing a simple, low-fuss option for someone seeking a bold change.

How are hair trends moving away from balayage?

Clients are shifting from balayage to updated highlights that deliver a lighter, more uniform finish. This change brings back brighter and natural looks while still adding depth and dimension to the hair without frequent root touch-ups.
