Why your hair wants to be a unicorn

Published on 6 April 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Move over glitter roots, there’s a new hair trend in town and it’s taken insta by storm. It started with the launch of cult beauty brand Lime Crime’s 11 shade semi permanent ‘Unicorn Hair Dye’, and the internet has since gone mad for this enchanting do’, which consists of an eclectic mix of sweet pastel greens, purples, pinks and blues, expertly blended together to create a look we can only describe as Little Mermaid meets My Little Pony.

Now trending on Instagram and Twitter, many are predicting it to become the festival hair trend of the season. Plenty of A-listers have also jumped on the back of this micro trend, with models Irene Kim and Chloe Nørgaard most recently spotted out on the town with colourful tresses. Not the most wearable of looks, but certainly the most fun, unicorn hair can be as experimental as you dare, from darker metallic shades to sickly sweet pastels, think of it as a slightly girlier version of the rainbow hair trend. Not sure you can pull it off? For a lower key version, ask your stylist to add a few semi permanent pastel low lights to the ends of your hair. You’ll be hooked in no time!
