This South London spa helped me refocus (and it only took a couple of hours)

9 September 2019 by Beth Ryan

While I would never turn down a weekend-long retreat – a beautiful, country spa set in the rolling hills (wow, I really painted myself a picture there) – unfortunately, time isn’t always on our side. I headed down to the Quad Health Club & Spa for a whistlestop tour of me-time, to see whether a couple of hours was enough to help me relax and refocus.

  • 1 The venue

Quad is located inside the Crowne Plaza in Docklands. I arrived there early (I’m one of those people) – luckily, the riverside setting and warm weather made it feel surprisingly non-London. Upon arrival, I was handed the hallmark of all good spa days – a robe and slippers – and shown around the facilities. The staff were super helpful – even recommending I visit the steam room to help with my cold (saviour).

  • 2 The treatment

I was treated to the Ache Escape Treatment – a 55-minute deep tissue massage – perfect for releasing toxins from the body (so great for colds). I was given the choice of three mood-enhancing oils and opted for ‘Joy’ – which is apparently the most popular with women. I’m a bit of a Goldilocks when it comes to pressure but my therapist nailed it. Firm enough to ease any knots, but still relaxing enough to nod off to.

  • 3 The facilities

The facilities at Quad are split into the Health Club and the Spa. They house everything you need for a brief respite of me-time. The gym and heated-pool are a great place to refocus the mind – the benefits of exercise go way beyond losing weight –  or, if you’re in it for the chilling (respect), there’s a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.

  • 4 The experience

The Quad Health Club and Spa is said to have ‘everything for complete wellbeing of mind and body’, and I agree. Despite feeling a little under the weather, I was relaxed throughout. I enjoyed my treatment and left feeling clearer-headed, mentally and in my sinuses. Bonus. If you’re looking for a no-frills spot for quick-time relaxation, I’d definitely recommend.
