The pastel nail trend is all over Instagram (and we can’t wait to try it when we’re back at the salon)

Published on 13 May 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Remember when everyone did the neon nails thing? I was convinced that would be my summer nail colour for life. Yes, life (its a big commitment but that’s how much I love them). Well, it turns out I’m going to have to alternate between neon and pastel (a summer timeshare, if you will) because now I love them both equally – as if they were my children.

Pastels are sweet and nostalgic, which is why they lend themselves so well to playful designs. Instagram is full of mismatch patterns and nail art (pastel clouds art particularly dreamy). A twist on the classic French mani is the coolest way to wear them. Go with candyfloss-coloured tips – bonus points if they’re asymmetric or ombre.

You don’t need to worry about pastel nails washing you out. Opt for the most flattering in terms of your skin tone if you’re unsure. Generally, the undertone of your skin and the pastel should compliment each other. So, cool (mint, baby blue, lilac) on cool skin and warm (peach, pink, orange, yellow) on warm. There are no rules really though.

    FAQs

How do you choose the best pastel nail shade for your skin tone?

Pick a pastel shade that complements your skin’s undertone for the most flattering look. Cool undertones pair well with mint, baby blue, or lilac, while warm undertones suit peach, pink, orange, or yellow. There are no strict rules, so you can experiment with any shade that appeals to you.

Can pastel nails work for every skin tone?

Yes, pastel nails can suit every skin tone when you choose complementary undertones. Matching a cool pastel like mint with cool skin or a warm pastel like peach with warm skin highlights your natural tones. You can also wear any pastel you enjoy, as there are no fixed rules.

What are some trendy designs for pastel nails?

The most popular pastel nail designs include mismatched patterns, ombre, and pastel clouds. A modern twist is the candyfloss-coloured tips on a French manicure. Asymmetric designs can make your look even more playful and unique.

Do pastel nails make you look washed out?

Pastel nails do not automatically make you look washed out if you choose your shades carefully. Matching your nail colour undertone to your skin undertone helps achieve a flattering effect. You can confidently wear pastel nails by selecting shades you love or those that enhance your skin tone.
