The hair colour trends you’ll be seeing a lot more of in 2018

Published on 23 August 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

We’ve had a year of nineties chops and pastel tones, but when it comes to hair colour trends, looks like things are set to get bright, bold and spicy (oo-er). Catwalk, Instagram, street style and, well, the office, there’s inspiration flooding in from everywhere, so we’ve rounded up our favourites. Make your appointment now, as you’re sure to be set on one of the below (sorry in advance for the temptation).

    By Rachel Spedding

    • 1 Acid brights

We can probably put this one down to Kylie Jenner, who started embracing the acid bright thing long ago with her extensive wig collection. Since then, Kanye West has put neon shades on the map with his ‘frozen yellow’ Yeezy collection. As for hair? It’s bold, fun and surprisingly easy to wear (more evidence here). Try tempering an acidic rainbow shades with a natural root, it’s a little more casual.

    • 2 Shades of blonde

Since the reign of ash grey and all things platinum, the blonde trend has transitioned to a little warmer in 2018. More golden, if you like – it works a treat on all skin tones. Softer, buttery, and somewhat beachy, it’s the summer hair trend that always swings round, but we think it’s sure to stay put through the cooler season. Try slicking it down for that ‘undone’ vibe, or scrunch up with salt spray once the root regrowth starts (it looks great with texture).

    • 3 Caramel rose

Well, we all love rosé. Caramel rose hair fuses a light brown (caramel) base with a pinky tinge, through ombre, balayage, or all-over colour. Actually, it works a treat on sombre too (that’s a ‘subtle’ ombre, FYI). Caramel rose is the simplest way to dabble in pastel tones, adding texture and dimension to brunette locks. Course, any hair colour can give rose a try: orange-pink blended into blonde looks mighty-fine, right Raye?

    • 4 Fiery red

There’s not much that’s natural about this hair trend – the more colour, the better (we’re talking loud). If you’re feeling a change, this is the shift to make – go spicy with deep burgundy red, or a little more fiery with rust orange. The Pumpkin Spice should be back any day, seems appropriate. Since bold colour can fade fast (and we want to keep it fresh), wash your hair in lukewarm water to protect it.

    FAQs

How do you make acid bright hair more wearable?

You can make acid bright hair more wearable by pairing the bold colour with a natural root. This helps balance the vibrant neon shades, adding a casual touch so the look feels less dramatic for daily wear.

What is caramel rose hair and who can try it?

Caramel rose hair blends a light brown, caramel base with a pinky tinge, applied through ombre, balayage or all-over colour. Anyone can try this trend, as even orange-pink tones blended into blonde work well and add dimension to both brunette and lighter locks.

Which shade of blonde works for all skin tones?

A warmer, golden blonde works for all skin tones and gives a softer, buttery effect. This shade provides a beachy vibe, and you can style it slicked down for an ‘undone’ effect or add texture with salt spray, especially as roots grow out.

How do you keep fiery red hair colour looking fresh?

Keep fiery red hair vibrant by washing with lukewarm water to help prevent colour fading. Bold shades like deep burgundy or rust orange can lose intensity quickly, so gentle washing helps maintain the freshness of your colour.

Can you book your next hair colour appointment online?

Yes, you can book your next beauty appointment online at your favourite salons for a simple and hassle-free experience. Treatwell lets you browse and discover salons in your area, making it easy to schedule your next hair colour or cut on the go.
