The French bob is already Autumn’s most chic haircut – here’s why we’re obsessed

Published on 1 September 2021 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

There are a few things that the French just get *right*. Food. Romance. Style. It’s difficult to pin down quite what it is that makes the French so good at these things, (they have a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will), but it seems like France just has chic-ness down to a fine art.

Recently we’ve seen the modern French Mani and reverse French nails, which we’ve been completely obsessing over all summer. Now that autumn is around the corner, though, it’s time for a new French-inspired trend to enter the spotlight. Cue: the French bob.

The French bob is a classic cut – it’s been around since the 1920s, and we can totally see why it has stood the test of time. The defining factor of the French bob is that it’s typically shorter than the standard bob we’re used to seeing. It bears some similarities to the 90s bob we’ve been loving for a while now – although the French version leans towards being ever so slightly choppier for that stylish un-done look. Still, it gives us major 90s throwback vibes, which is always a good thing in our book.

Back in its original flapper heyday, the French bob was around chin-length, blunt, and worn pretty straight. Now, the ‘traditional’ French bob is a little choppier, wavier, and carries a lot of weight- especially around the ends.

As with most trends, though, there are plenty of interpretations. With the resurgence of the modern French bob, we’re seeing much more variety in the length, styling, and cut. Some opt for an even shorter version (we’re talking cheek to lip length), or a more grown-out, mid-neck-length look. It’s being paired with full fringes, curtain and baby bangs, and being worn anywhere from sleek and straight to full-blown curls. Really, the French bob is all about nailing that uber-French attitude – whichever version you opt for –  it’s bound to be effortlessly cool, classy, and très chic.

So, make sure to take plenty of inspo pics with you for the exact look you’re going for, and you’re ready for the chop. Add a beret, et voila – you’ll be on your way to nailing French style in no time.

    FAQs

What makes a French bob different from a standard bob?

A French bob is typically shorter than a standard bob and has a slightly choppier texture. It often gives an un-done look that feels effortlessly cool and chic. The style draws inspiration from classic 1920s haircuts but is now available in wavier and more varied forms.

How long is a traditional French bob haircut?

A traditional French bob is cut to around chin-length. This style was popular during its original era and was known for being blunt and worn straight. Modern interpretations can be even shorter—cheek to lip length—or extend to a more mid-neck-length look.

Can you style a French bob with different fringes or bangs?

Yes, the French bob is very versatile and can be paired with full fringes, curtain bangs, or baby bangs. It works well with various styling options, from sleek and straight to full-blown curls. The haircut adapts easily to different looks and personal styles.

Which styling options work for a French bob cut?

A French bob can be worn sleek and straight, wavy, or even with full curls. The style is all about creating an effortless, chic appearance that matches a variety of hair textures. Whether you prefer a polished or a messier look, the French bob suits both.

What should you bring to your appointment for a French bob?

It’s helpful to bring inspiration photos to show exactly what look you want. This ensures your stylist understands the specific length, fringe style, or texture you are aiming for. Being prepared helps achieve that stylish, French-inspired finish.
