How to keep your eyelash/eyebrow tint for longer

Published on 23 November 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Okay, so you’ve tinted your lashes and/or brows and you’re good to go, right? Well…kind of. With a little aftercare, you’ll be sporting show-off-able lashes for longer. Here’s what to expect right after your treatment and how to get the best possible results long after you’ve left the salon.

  • 1 It will fade

If your brows or lashes look too dark, don’t worry – it will fade. It’s important the colour is a little darker to begin with so the tint lasts. The initial darkness will only last a few days and will get a little closer to the right colour every time you cleanse your face.

  • 2 Keep them dry

Avoid getting your lashes or brows wet for 12 hours after having them tinted. Cleanse around the areas with a gentle product instead. Giving the dye longer to settle is a tried and tested way to make your tint last longer.

  • 3 Avoid oil based cleanser

Check your cleanser/eye makeup remover isn’t oil-based. Oil strips the tint from your lashes/brows, which means you’ll have to return to the salon sooner than you’d like. Swap for gel or cream based cleansers: they’re nice and gentle and will save you time and money in the long run.

FAQs

How long should you keep lashes and brows dry after tinting?

You should avoid getting your lashes or brows wet for 12 hours after tinting. This waiting period lets the dye settle fully so your tint lasts longer.

Why do your lashes or brows look too dark right after tinting?

Lashes and brows look darker straight after tinting because the initial colour is meant to be a little stronger. This darkness will fade over a few days as you cleanse your face, settling to the intended shade.

What kind of cleanser should you use after a lash or brow tint?

Choose a gel or cream based cleanser after your tint. Oil-based cleansers strip away the tint faster, so switching helps your colour last longer and extends the time between salon visits.

How can you make your lash or brow tint last longer?

Keep the area dry for at least 12 hours and use a gentle, non-oil cleanser. These small changes protect the tint, letting you enjoy bold brows and lashes for as long as possible.
