Playing Cupid: find the brow style for your face shape

Published on 10 July 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

While of course you’re free to do whatever you want with your brows (the limit’s your imagination), they can do a lot complement your face shape. A high arch, for example, can work wonders for a round or square-ish shaped face. If you’ve tried as many brow styles as brightly coloured mascara shades (our teens were a time of discovery) but now you’re on the hunt for The One, read on.

    • 1 Round faces: sharp and sophisticated

Round, symmetrical faces tend to look soft and sweet – you probably got ID'd till you were 27. If you want to add an touch of attitude (looking young can have its disadvantages too – or so we've been told) a high-arched eyebrow can give a bit of edge to your look. Panic not, you don't need to painstakingly sculpt your brows yourself – a quick threading session can be all you need to create this shape.

    • 2 Square faces: high and dark

A prominent arch and a strong jawline are dream bed partners. Whether you go for a gentle curve or sharp angle, a noticeable arc will open up your face beautifully. Square-shaped faces look great with dark and dramatic shades too. So if you've been eyeing up an indigo eyebrow pencil but you keep chickening out, we say go for it.

    • 3 Long faces: wide and flat

Who needs contouring? (OK, we do a bit – hey, it's addictive.) But wider brows do a similar thing when it comes to bringing the balance to longer faces. For a quick fix, use an eyebrow pencil to add to the ends of your brows. As for shape, keep them fairly flat. If you want something a bit more permanent than the eyebrow pencil – or you're not feeling brave enough to trust your (un)steady hand – give microblading a go.

    • 4 Heart faces: soft and subtle

Generally speaking, heart-shaped faces are already well-balanced so your eyebrows have the easy job of emphasising that shape. Go for a rounded brow with a low arch – this will frame your eyes and make your face look nice and open. It's also pretty low maintenance, so you just need to pop in some threading or waxing appointments in the diary.

    • 5 Oval faces: au naturel

You get to skip the preening if you've got an oval face. These face types are so well-balanced that your brows don't really need to do anything. Great if you prefer the au naturel look – just tidy up any stray hairs with a bit of plucking or threading. Or, simply do nothing at all.

    FAQs

Which brow shape suits a round face best?

A high-arched eyebrow suits a round face best, adding edge and sophistication to soft, symmetrical features. This shape can be easily achieved with threading and helps to balance the youthful appearance often associated with round faces.

What eyebrow style works well for square faces?

A prominent arch paired with a dark, dramatic brow works well for square faces. A noticeable arc opens up the face, while bold shades enhance the overall look, complementing a strong jawline.

How can you balance a long face using brow shape?

Wider, fairly flat eyebrows help balance the proportions of a long face. Using an eyebrow pencil to extend the brow ends creates width, and treatments like microblading provide a more lasting solution for those seeking extra definition.

What is the easiest brow shape for a heart-shaped face?

A rounded brow with a low arch is the easiest style for a heart-shaped face. This soft shape frames the eyes, highlights your natural balance, and requires only simple threading or waxing appointments for upkeep.

Should you reshape your brows if you have an oval face?

If you have an oval face, there’s no need to reshape your brows. Oval faces are already well-balanced, so a natural look with occasional tidying or threading is all that’s needed.
