We know it’s not exactly a hardship to apply a lash-boosting sweep of mascara. Worse things in life and all that. But late night make-up removal on a school night – and the wrong side of 12am? We’ll confess, the lure of sleep wins us over more often than not.
Here are the three treatments we’d swap our mascara for.
-
1 Lash perm
It's OK if you've veered away from perms since Kylie Minogue was in Neighbours. The lash equivalent of the hairstyle that we left in the '80s is a totally different breed of perm.
The eyelash perming process will see your lashes spread over a mini roller before a solution is applied. Once complete, you’ll be the proud owner of lashes that really show off your eyes. That coquettish curl should survive until your next pay cheque.

2 Lash tinting
If you're bound to the 'less is more' school of thought, try lash tinting. The gentle dye process gives a dark and luscious finish, but still looks natural, so it's ideal if you just want a subtle change. It gives an impression of extra length as your lashes will be more prominent, but doesn't physically add any extra millimetres. We've found mascara doesn't mix with hot, sweaty public transport (we never figured out how to apply mascara on a moving bus anyway), so lash tinting's ideal for the summer.

3 Lash extensions
Extensions come straight from the 'bigger is better' camp. With this treatment, the technician applies individual lashes to your own to boost volume and flutter. And one size definitely doesn’t fit all: you choose the length, the curl and the colour. Whether you opt for a natural-looking set or go for all-out glamour, heading out mascara-free is more satisfying than popping bubble wrap.

FAQs
What is the main difference between lash perm, tinting and extensions?
A lash perm lifts and curls your natural lashes, lash tinting adds colour for a darker look, and lash extensions add volume by attaching individual lashes. Each treatment creates a different effect, from enhanced curl to fuller, longer-looking lashes.
How long does a lash perm typically last?
A lash perm usually lasts until your next pay cheque, giving you enduring curl without daily curling or mascara. This makes it a convenient option for people seeking low-maintenance, defined lashes.
Can you choose the length and curl for lash extensions?
Yes, you can customise the length, curl and colour when getting lash extensions. This allows you to create either a natural or a dramatic look, depending on your preferences.
Is lash tinting good for people who want a natural look?
Lash tinting creates a dark and luscious finish while still looking natural. This is perfect if you prefer subtle changes and want your lashes to appear more prominent without appearing artificial.
When is lash tinting an ideal choice over mascara?
Lash tinting is ideal for summer or whenever mascara does not hold up well, such as on hot or sweaty days. It avoids issues like smudging and provides lasting colour without the need for daily makeup.
