13 ways to try metallic hair

Published on 5 July 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Shine might be the bi-product of this summer’s metallic hair trend but it’s the main reason we’re getting on board. Just look at how glossy tones of opal, pewter and silver can look when expertly weaved through your hair. Impressive right? Already spotted on early adopters such as Nicole Ritchie and Yasmin Le Bon, it’s a look that keeps on giving thanks to a healthy dose of colour and condition in equal measures. It might look like a single shot of colour to us, the untrained eye, but colourist, Vannata, from GRO salon in Clapham assures us it’s all down to the careful blending of a mixture of iridescent shades. ‘Adding shimmer to the hair automatically brings shines and creates a truly beautiful effect, pinks and purples take on an icy glimmer, while blues and greens are enriched with a jewel-like glow.’  The only downside of this dazzling colour trend? It’s best-boosted with an ice cold rinse after every wash to seal in shine for as long as possible. Brrrr…

    FAQs

How do you achieve the metallic hair trend look?

Expertly blending a mixture of iridescent shades creates the metallic hair trend. This style combines shades like opal, pewter and silver for glossy, shimmering results. Colourists carefully weave these tones to deliver maximum shine and a jewel-like glow.

Which shades work best for a metallic, glossy hair finish?

Opal, pewter and silver are standout shades for a metallic look. When blended skillfully, pinks and purples achieve an icy glimmer, while blues and greens appear rich and jewel-like. These combinations maximise shine and give hair a multidimensional glow.

How can you keep your metallic hair colour looking shiny?

Rinsing your hair with ice cold water after every wash helps seal in shine for as long as possible. The cold rinse boosts the luminosity of metallic and iridescent shades, extending the glossy effect of your colour treatment.

Which celebrities have been seen wearing the metallic hair trend?

Nicole Ritchie and Yasmin Le Bon have both been spotted with the metallic hair trend. Their looks highlight the popularity of these glossy, multi-tonal shades, inspiring others to try the trend for themselves.
