How to wear 2018’s autumn trends on your nails

Published on 16 October 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Fashionistas, that’s us. But, sometimes, tracksuit pants and an XXL fluffy jumper are more of a priority when office-dressing than catwalk copies. Each to their own on the style thing, but should you wish to bring a little #fashun to your every day get up, join us in wearing this season’s ‘trends’ on our fingertips. Colours and print, here’s how to fix up your manicure.

By Rachel Spedding

  • 1 Animal print

You’ve seen it on the gal to your right in the office, and your nan at sunday lunch last week; animal print is taking over. Not just lining the walls at Zara, it was a key trend call out at Fashion Week, spotted – ahem – on catwalks like Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham. This one’s best left to the pros (a very steady hand is required), but looks 10/10 with an assortment of colours.

  • 2 Brown

Fendi probably made this one happen (though Kanye will no-doubt claim it): earthy tones are in, and they look surprisingly wonderful on our fingertips. Whether it’s a muted Yeezy vibe, or 70s-style chocolate, I’m calling it – brown is the shade to go for. Sure, it’s a little different, but the warm undertones will look top notch through the colder season, and will suit the entirety of your autumn attire. Psst – nude counts.

  • 3 Plaid

From traditional tartan to neon check, plaid comes back on the scene every autumn – and with good reason. It’s the print that sings ‘chilly’, and looks seriously intricate on your nail beds. Why not try it on your ring finger and keep the rest of your nails one block shade? Just like layering a really great jumper with your (obviously brand new) winter coat.

  • 4 Athleisure

Otherwise known as ‘what you wear to brunch’, or sportswear for the sofa (just me?). The renaissance of brands like Umbro, Ellesse and Fila have got our popper trousers back out the loft, and spicing up our mani. Add stripes to a statement finger with nail art, to pay homage to the athleisure trend (we’d suggest a burgundy base for extra ‘fashion’ points).

  • 5 Jazzy jumpers

Remember those sweaters you wore when you were little? Matching with your brother? Loud, garish, and consuming every disposable photo your mum took from 1990-onward? They’re back. If a screaming-in-your-face print is too much for your wardrobe, wear it on your hands; it works a treat on shorter nails (and hides a multitude of biting sins).
