How to remove lash extensions at home (using things from the kitchen cupboard)

Published on 3 April 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Lash extensions hanging on for dear life? Infills aren’t an option right now but – repeat after me – that doesn’t mean you should pull them out. It’s sacrilege for your natural lashes and we’re not meant to be touching our face, remember? Besides, it’s so easy to remove them properly.

  • 1 Steam your face

Fill a big bowl with hot water and place your face over it. Steam your face for 15 minutes to help loosen the glue (putting a towel over the back of your head will keep the steam in). This bit is also pretty great for the skin – especially stubborn blackheads.

  • 2 Soak the lashes

Soak a cotton pad in oil (olive or coconut oil work best) and hold it against your lashes for a couple of minutes. The oil breaks down the glue – hence why you avoid oil-based cleansers when wearing extensions – and your lash extensions should slide right off.

  • 3 Cleanse your skin

Since the steam has opened up your pores, now is a pretty good time to cleanse. Remove any oil residue from the eye area and then double-cleanse the face and neck – the first is to get rid of any dirt, while the second actually cleans the skin.

FAQs

How do you safely remove lash extensions at home?

The safest way to remove lash extensions at home is by using steam and oil. Hold your face over steam for 15 minutes to loosen the glue, then use a cotton pad soaked in olive or coconut oil on your lashes to help slide the extensions off.

Which oils work best for breaking down lash extension glue?

Olive oil and coconut oil work best for breaking down lash extension glue. Apply the oil with a soaked cotton pad, hold it against your lashes for a couple of minutes, and the extensions should come away easily.

How long should you steam your face to loosen lash glue?

You should steam your face for 15 minutes to help loosen lash extension glue. This process makes removal easier and is also beneficial for your skin, especially if you have stubborn blackheads.

Why should you avoid pulling out lash extensions by hand?

Pulling out lash extensions by hand can damage your natural lashes. It’s safer and healthier to use methods like steaming and oil to gently remove them without causing harm.

What should you do after removing your lash extensions?

After removing lash extensions, cleanse your skin to remove any leftover oil and residue. Since steaming opens up your pores, it’s a good time to double-cleanse your face and neck for a thorough clean.
