Eyebrow expert, Shavata, gave us her top tips for at-home brow maintenance

Published on 9 April 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

DIY beauty treatments are split into two categories; there’s the fun stuff – face masks, nail art and the likes – and then there is the serious stuff. The high-risk, I-literally-can’t-f***-this-up stuff. Eyebrows are definitely the latter (I remember what I did to them years ago – never again). Luckily, we’ve got brow master, Shavata, to guide us.

By Beth Ludolf

  • 1 Use two mirrors

If you’re going to do anything to do your brows, Shavata recommends having two mirrors to hand; one magnifying mirror and one larger one. “Use the magnifying mirror when tweezing but keep checking the “bigger picture” in the larger mirror”, she explains, “it’ll help you keep things even”.

  • 2 Tweeze a few hairs a day

Usually, we say don’t touch your brows between appointments, but right now all rules are out the window. “Tweeze a few hairs a day, rather than leaving them and trying to do it all in one go”, Shavata says “that way you can easily stick to the shape – especially if you’ve had them done professionally recently”.

  • 3 Trim the hairs

If you want to regain a bit of shape, give your brows a trim. “You’ll need a spoolie brush and some straight scissors.”, Shavata explains “Brush all the hairs up – anything standing beyond the shape of your brow is what you trim. Make sure you use small snips, one big snip will give you a wonky line”.

  • 4 Grow them out

Now is the best time to grow out your brows – think about it, nobody will see them in the unruly phase then when this is done you can get them shaped professionally. Shavata suggests applying castor oil to them each day, “there’s no better way to get thicker, fuller brows”.

During this uncertain time, we’ll be continuing to create the content you love – whether for distraction, inspiration or to give guidance on wellbeing. If there’s anything you’d like to see (or not see) please contact us on Instagram @treatwell_uk. We hope you keep safe and healthy.

FAQs

How should you use mirrors when tweezing your eyebrows?

Use a magnifying mirror for tweezing and a larger one to check overall shape. Switching between both helps keep your brows even and prevents over-tweezing.

How many eyebrow hairs should you tweeze at one time?

Tweeze just a few hairs each day rather than removing a lot at once. This approach makes it easier to maintain your brow shape, especially if you have had them done professionally before.

What tools do you need to trim your eyebrows at home?

You need a spoolie brush and straight scissors for trimming your brows. Brush the hairs up with the spoolie, then use small snips to cut any hair standing beyond your brow shape. Avoid using one big snip to prevent uneven lines.

How can you make your eyebrows grow thicker and fuller?

Apply castor oil daily to help achieve thicker, fuller brows. Now is the ideal time to grow out your brows, as you can let them look unruly until you’re ready for a professional shape-up.
