No, it won’t get you stoned. CBD, short for cannabidiol, isn’t the same thing as marijuana. The cannabis sativa plant contains around 100 different cannabinoids – the two main ones are CBD and THC. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid extracted from the leaves and flowers of the plant, while THC is the bit that gets you high.
Why’s everyone talking about it?
CBD is definitely the beauty trend du jour – it’s everywhere at the minute. It was recently legalised for medicinal use in the UK and the health benefits have got the beauty world talking.
What are the benefits?
CBD has pain-killing and anti-inflammatory properties (as a chronic eczema sufferer, the words “anti-inflammatory” are music to my ears). Cannabinoids are great for soothing irritated skin, calming skin conditions – such as eczema and psoriasis – and treating dry skin. CBD is also ‘sebostatic’ meaning it can help to regulate the skin’s oil production (read: less breakouts).
CBD treatments are getting more and more popular. Matt Bartell, owner of Threads & Co in West London, started offering CBD treatments around two months ago – “we have a natural brand ethos – we already offering natural treatments like sugaring and threading, the all-natural benefits of CBD fit that ethos”.
Why choose a CBD-infused treatment?
“Its definitely a more holistic approach”, Matt explained, “the CBD offers different benefits depending on the treatment. For example, CBD can be used during massage to aid deep relaxation and hypertension release. We also offer a CBD manicure and pedicure – which is great for increased circulation and hydration – and a facial. The facial is excellent for calming irritated skin, it uses a CBD-infused clay mask and CBD coffee scrub.”.
