Bubble braids might be our fave celeb hair trend right now, and they’re so easy to do

Published on 18 May 2021 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Say it with me: Y2K is everything right now. Shoulder bags, Juicy tracksuits, and low-rise jeans? Check, check, check. One of our fave Y2K popstar-inspired trends at the moment is one that Tiktokers and red carpet A-listers alike are loving – the bubble braid.

We’ve been seeing them everywhere- ‘Rising Star’ Brit Award winner Griff wore an ah-mazing oversized bubble braid for her live Brit performance, Gigi Hadid rocked (adorable) mini versions for her birthday celebrations, and Priyanka Chopra looked insanely sleek and sophisticated with her red-carpet bubble braid at the BAFTA Awards.

Honestly? Bubble braids might just be the perfect hairstyle – they’re great for disguising day two (or three) hair, they give us major Y2K vibes, and there’s a tonne of different ways to style them. The best thing though? They’re officially the easiest way to level-up your hair game, because they’re super simple to create.

To try the look yourself, start by tying your hair with an elastic into your fave ponytail (high, mid, or low depending on the look you’re going for). Tie another elastic a couple of inches down the ponytail, then tease the hair in the space between the elastics with your fingers until it reaches the shape you’re going for. Repeat until you have as many sections as you fancy, then tease each ‘bubble’ again until you have the shape you want. If you’re feeling experimental, you can try it with pigtails, sport some mini face-framing braids a la Gigi, or add some cute accessories – this trend is all about fun and playfulness, so anything goes.

If it seems like I’m slightly obsessed with bubble braids, it’s because I am. Need some inspo to try them yourself? We got you.

    FAQs

How do you create a bubble braid hairstyle yourself?

Start by tying your hair into your favourite ponytail with an elastic, then add another elastic a couple of inches down the ponytail. Next, tease the sectioned hair between the elastics with your fingers until each segment puffs out. Repeat as many times as you like for more ‘bubbles’ and adjust each one to your desired shape.

Why are bubble braids considered a versatile hairstyle?

Bubble braids are versatile because you can style them in many ways—high, mid, or low ponytails, pigtails, or even mini face-framing braids. This playful trend is great for experimenting with different looks and suits both casual and red carpet events.

What makes bubble braids a popular trend right now?

Bubble braids are hugely popular due to their strong Y2K vibes and celebrity endorsements from people like Griff, Gigi Hadid, and Priyanka Chopra. They’re also easy to create and work for various hair types and occasions.

Can bubble braids help you on days when your hair isn’t freshly washed?

Yes, bubble braids are ideal for disguising day two or three hair. The style adds volume and structure, making hair look refreshed and intentional even when it’s not freshly washed.

How can you personalise your bubble braid look?

You can personalise your bubble braid by changing the ponytail height, using pigtails, adding mini braids near the face, or incorporating accessories. This trend encourages creativity and playfulness, so you can truly make the look your own.
