We challenged a hair dye rookie to have a dramatic colour change. Here’s what happened…

Published on 6 April 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Dramatic red hair was all over Miu Miu’s Paris runway show recently, and frankly we can’t get enough of it. But how wearable is it IRL? Our friend and avid Treatwell user Kelly has never dyed her hair before, so who better to be our guinea pig? Opting to go from her natural brunette roots to head turning copper, we caught up with her at The Lion & the Fox in Farringdon to watch the transformation unfold first hand. Spoiler alert: she looks amazing!

    • 1 Step 1

Here's Kelly in all her natural brunette glory. She looks great no matter what, but a little bit of colour never hurt anyone. Is that a nervous giggle we see?

    • 2 Step 2

After a thorough consultation with her lovely stylist, the dye job commences! No turning back now Kelly…

    • 3 Step 3

Starting at the crown of the head and working her way down, Kelly's head is evenly coated with her chosen dye from root to tip.

    • 4 Step 4

Once all the new colour has been applied, there's a half an hour wait for the dye to penetrate and really take hold.

    • 5 Step 5

After an anxious wait, it's time to wash it all out and finish with a deep conditioning treatment to protect her colour and keep it looking fresh.

    • 6 Step 6

And now for that all important blow dry. Because what's a new 'do without a fabulous bounce to finish it off?

    • 7 Step 7

Ta daaa! Kelly's first official dye job is in the bag, and doesn't she look great? For her first foray into colour, she's gone for a head turning yet subtle shade that's transformed her look entirely. See, it really isn't that scary after all…

    FAQs

What steps are involved when you dye your hair for the first time?

The process starts with a consultation, then applies dye from roots to tip, followed by waiting, rinsing, and a deep conditioning treatment. The final step is a blow dry to reveal your new look. These stages ensure even colour application and hair protection.

How do you ensure even hair colour from root to tip?

Even coverage is achieved by starting at the crown and working down, coating the hair all over with dye. This technique makes sure the new colour is consistent throughout your whole head, giving a smooth, vibrant result.

What happens after your hair dye is applied at a salon?

After the dye is on, you wait for the colour to develop, then your hair is washed out and treated with a deep conditioning treatment. This protects your hair and helps the new colour stay fresh. A professional blow dry completes the service and finishes the transformation.

Can you book beauty treatments online with Treatwell?

Yes, with Treatwell you can book beauty appointments at your favourite salons online. The process is simple, hassle-free, and lets you make bookings on the go. This makes organising your next hair or beauty treatment quick and convenient.

What result can you expect after your first professional hair dye?

You can expect a transformation that is both head turning and subtle. Even if you’re nervous, the process is straightforward and results in a fresh, revitalised look tailored to your style.
