Could this be the most futuristic way to get rid of blackheads?

Published on 1 December 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Introducing WTF (#wetriedfirst – see what we did there?) a series in which we demystify lesser known and up and coming treatments. We try them, we test them, and we take you with us every step of the way. Recently we sent our Hannah to try out an extraction facial at Face Place, a blemish busting treatment designed to get rid of blackheads and impurities by manually removing them one by one. It’s scarier than it sounds, we promise…

  • 1 Step 1: The cleanse

The first stage of this treatment is designed to prep and clean the skin. Antibacterial Yukka Root pads are applied to open pores, helping to liquefy sebum (that’s that oily substance that helps keep the skin and hair moisturized) and prepare your face for the extraction.

  • 2 Step 2: The heat dome

To get pores ready for the grime removal, a heat dome is then placed over the face. This essentially acts as a miniature steam room for your complexion, decongesting your skin and ensuring it’s perfectly prepped for the next stage of the facial.

  • 3 Step 3: The extraction

Next, the extraction! Using a gentle rolling hand technique, your therapist will then coax all impurities from your skin. Unlike DIY at-home spot removal that can leave your face red and damaged, a trained therapist knows exactly how to remove these blackheads and blemishes without breaking the skin.

  • 4 Step 4: The galvanic mask

After the extraction, to soothe the skin your therapist will apply a mask using cotton wool that has been soaked in a restorative vitamin C and zinc solution. A powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C helps to regenerate tissue and stimulate collagen production, while zinc targets inflammation and calms the facial tissues for a glowing complexion. During this step, the galvanic mask is then applied – it looks scary, but the high-tech current helps the pores to absorb the vitamins and give the ultimate tightening, lifting and calming results.

  • 5 Step 5: Continued…

As well as encouraging the ingredients to deeply penetrate into the lower layers of the skin, as the frequency of the the galvanic mask is turned up, it stimulates cell renewal and oxygenates every pore for an instantly youthful glow.

  • 6 Step 6: The reveal

Et voila – firmer, youthful, and deeply cleansed skin. 'I loved the result' explained Hannah 'my skin looked plumped and fresh immediately after the treatment!'

This treatment was done at Face Place at Rosewood London.

FAQs

What is an extraction facial and how does it work?

An extraction facial is a blemish-busting treatment that removes blackheads and impurities by manually extracting them one by one. A therapist prepares your skin with cleansing, steam, and specific techniques, ensuring impurities are removed without damaging your skin for a clearer, fresher look.

How does the cleansing step prepare your skin for extraction?

The cleanse uses antibacterial Yukka Root pads to open your pores and help liquefy sebum. This step prepares your face for effective extraction by making it easier to remove impurities and excess oil during the treatment.

What does the galvanic mask do during the facial?

The galvanic mask delivers vitamin C and zinc deep into your skin using a special current. This process regenerates tissue, boosts collagen, calms inflammation, and gives your skin a noticeable tightening and lifting effect.

Will your skin look red or damaged after an extraction facial?

Your skin should look plumped and fresh immediately after an extraction facial with a trained therapist. Unlike at-home extractions, professional techniques reduce redness or damage and help reveal a firmer, more youthful complexion.
