7 things people with great eyebrows always do

Published on 2 September 2021 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

‘Perfect brows’, I know that you do exist, I’ve seen you sitting proudly on the foreheads of Lily Collins, Emily Ratajowski and co. So, how on earth does one achieve such greatness? Especially with an overly ‘plucky’ brow history? It’s possible, it just won’t happen overnight. Enhancing shape, size and texture will take some work, but we know how to do it (and now you will too).

    1 No plucking, ever

The clue’s in the name if you’re growing out your brows. Step away from the tweezers, the scissors, your favourite threader. You have to let your brows do their thing before shaping (so that there’s something to shape). Hand your tweezers to a friend if you must, this is a long-game, and you’ll need to find some patience.

2 In fact, just don’t look

Yes, magnifying mirrors are incredibly satisfying; spot-inspecting, hair-searching, really getting to grips with a zoomed in version of yourself. But, on the quest for great brows, never flip that mirror to zoom, or you’ll be much too tempted to Whatsapp your mate and ask for those tweezers back. Consider your brows in full when styling and shaping, not those cheeky strands above and below.

3 Don’t try and match them

You know how the saying goes – they’re sisters, not twins. Striving for ‘perfect’ isn’t really a solid approach.Your brows weren’t made to be equal, which is a rather nice concept actually. You’ll hate them multiple times throughout this process, but don’t give up. We made it from the 90s, we can get through this.

    4 A clean spoolie matters

(That’s the bristled brush attached to your mascara wand). Chucking the tweezers doesn’t mean ignore all the tools. A clean spoolie serves more purpose than brushing your brows into shape, they’re the perfect device for applying oil to your eyebrows each evening – that’ll hydrate the hairs and help them to grow. Easy.

    5 Choose your removal

Once you’ve decided on your ‘thing’, stick with it, whether that’s threading, waxing, or microblading (check you out). With both waxing and threading, the hair will grow back finer over time. There’s benefits of each; you can head for a thread more frequently (as the technique can grab the hair at much shorter length), while waxing will encourage hairs to grow back finer over time.

    6 Upwards, always

Make sure to brush your brows upwards during the growing-in process, to give the illusion of longer length (fake it ‘til you make it and all that). Once they’ve reached your ideal length, this is also a simple technique for spotting out-of-place hairs that need a trim. Brushing downwards will help you spot gaps to fill in with pencil (if you’re into that), but as a general rule – brush ‘em up.

7 Go easy on the pomade

… When filling in your eyebrows. Yes, I too am watching slow motion videos of ‘carved out’ brows on the Explore page of Instagram, but follow the shape and colour palette of your own eyebrows, not your favourite influencer. The Sharpie look isn’t a winner. That goes for products too, there’s no need to splurge on the expensive stuff, read reviews, chat with your brow-minded friends and find a range within your budget (this one is spectacular).

FAQs

How do you grow out your eyebrows after over-plucking?

Stop all plucking, trimming and shaping to allow natural regrowth. You need patience, as the full shape, size and texture return gradually. Keeping tweezers and scissors away is essential for new hairs to come in.

Why should you avoid using a magnifying mirror when growing brows?

Magnifying mirrors make it tempting to over-tweeze or pluck stray hairs. For the best results, always view your brows as a whole when styling, instead of focusing on individual strands with a zoomed-in mirror.

What is the benefit of brushing your brows upwards?

Brushing brows upwards creates the illusion of longer brows and helps spot any unruly hairs that may need trimming. It also helps you identify gaps more easily when filling in with a pencil, but upwards brushing is the recommended general approach for styling.

How do you keep your brows healthy while growing them?

Use a clean spoolie brush to distribute a hydrating oil across your brows each evening. This keeps brow hairs moisturised and can help promote healthier growth during the regrowth phase.

Which eyebrow removal technique lets you treat regrowth more often?

Threading allows for more frequent brow maintenance because it can remove shorter hair lengths compared to waxing. Both threading and waxing encourage finer regrowth, but threading is ideal if you want regular upkeep while growing your brows.
