4 things you can do on your lunch break that don’t involve your desk

Published on 24 August 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Tapping away between bites of Pret sandwich = life. Between back to back meetings and admin, the urge to work through your lunch hour is real. In fact, over 50% of us are doing it *guilty face*. The reality is that our brain just isn’t wired to function in that way, and eating ‘al desko’ is healthy for no one. There are much better ways to spend those 240 hours a year (!), and not just returning that ASOS parcel under your desk. Step up from your uncomfortable office chair and get to doing. Here are four things worth trying.

By Danielle Petch

  • 1 Go for a pedicure

A case of ‘sandal heel’ or just looking for some feet TLC, taking an hour out of your day for some well deserved pampering will help. A dry pedicure will spruce up your feet and finish with a polish of your choice. You’ll be in and out the salon in well under an hour – giving you enough time to chill (catch up on your Instagram feed) and finish that meal deal.

  • 2 Head to the park

Staring at a computer screen all day long can cause eye strain (computer vision syndrome is a thing), and increased tiredness. Take an hour out for a burst of fresh air, see your friends, chat with your mum, it can improve your mood and mental wellbeing. A change of scene is good for creativity and it’s bonus exercise – winning. The only negative? It’s tough to drag yourself back to the office… and the wasps.

  • 3 Destress with a massage

It comes as no surprise that a massage serves up a multitude of benefits, including reducing stress and anxiety. Escaping the pressures of the office for 40 minutes is a guaranteed help, while that tension in your shoulders from staring at a computer screen will be shifted too. Massage allows blood to flow more freely through the body, so you’ll be back at your desk (in around 40 minutes), feeling seriously refreshed.

  • 4 A date with yourself

New lunch spot, with a book in tow, or a trip to nail salon for a swift file and paint, spending time on your lunch hour doing what makes you happy should be number one priority. There’s a long list of things to try – a bucket list is a good place to start (museums, picnic, filling up that Nero stamps card) – to get you back on form post-lunch. Turn off the email notifications and zone out for an hero. You deserve a break (it’s literally essential).
