4 fresh bridal up-dos we’re saying ‘we will’ to

15 May 2018 by Beth Ryan

There’s a reason why many choose an up-do for the big day. Not only does it sneakily avoid any weather-related issues (humidity, rain and wind can be monstrously unkind), it also lets your dress take centre-stage. But if you’re looking for something less traditional, there are dozens of alternatives to this fail-safe style for the bride of 2018. So – without further ado – here are four fresh styles for brides-to-be.

  • 1 The new take on braids

Braids are back, they're versatile and they're here to stay. You can put your own stamp on bridal braids – whether you go for fishtail braids, face-framing plaits or soft, layered twists for a touch of femininity. Weaving your hair is also practical as it holds the style for longer. Substance and style – what more could you ask for?

  • 2 The modern ponytail

Yes, you read that right. A ponytail, on your wedding day. But we're not talking about scraping it back with an elastic band (although that style looks great too). Ask your stylist to soften this up-do by wrapping a piece of ribbon around the base and twisting it through your hair. Try to avoid having the pony too tight; a few loose tendrils and some backcombing around the scalp will add some wedding-ready style.

  • 3 The colour showcase

Balayage and ombre are still dominating wedding season, and for good reason. It's the ultimate low-maintenance bride look that looks wonderfully natural. You'll look little undone and a little – dare we say it – imperfect. (In a perfect way, of course.)

In hairdresser speak, this means tousled and textured. Your stylist may add waves, pull the 'do apart or tease it into a windswept up-do all in the name of imperfection.

  • 4 The natural side bun

Break tradition with an off-centre bun. The lack of symmetry will give you a casual, relaxed look while still scooping the hair off your neck. Make sure your stylist knows what side will be facing guests during the ceremony, so you can be sure it's on full display. Not like you're overthinking how you'll look in the photos or anything.
