These 31 shades of auburn hair will convince you to go red for Autumn šŸ

Published on 2 September 2022 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Okay, I know, I know – auburn? For Autumn? Groundbreaking. We’ve seen it all before – the longing for autumnal auburn hair returns every time the leaves start to fall, and exquisite orange heads of hair seem to be popping up everywhere. (Just ask TikTok, where #gingerhair is currently trending with over 100 million views).

And yet, I’m just as in love with it this year as I have been in years gone by. There’s something about gorgeous ginger locks (and converting to them) that just feels so right this time of year. I think it might have something to do with the falling crimson leaves, the Halloween pumpkins, and the bonfires – not to mention the frankly frightening amount of pumpkin spice lattes I’ve been consuming this month.

The great thing about red hair is that it’s flattering for every skin colour and hair type. Plus, there’s an endless array of shades to choose from. Go for subtle and natural – with soft strawberry blonde, natural-looking ginger, or a warm auburn like that being rocked by Gigi Hadid in Fashion Weeks across the globe. Or, opt for a bit of *drama* and go for vibrant red, or blazing orange Ć  la Bella Thorne.

If you’re not quite up to a full-head transformation – why not add a pop of ginger in one of the recent fave styles. We’re talking face-framing highlights, colourful accents, and balayages in oh-so-autumnal shades of red and fiery orange. Dreamy. This year’s edgiest twist is a full head of black or dark brown with a shock of bright colour thrown in the mix. Bonus? It doubles as the perfect goth-but-glam Halloween look.

If you’re ready to take the plunge (or if you need a little more convincing), here’s all the inspo you need.

FAQs

Why is auburn hair so popular in autumn?

Auburn hair becomes especially popular in autumn because it reflects the season’s natural changes. The rich reds and oranges of falling leaves, pumpkins and bonfires inspire people to choose these colours for their hair, making them fit perfectly with autumn vibes.

Which hair shades work well for an autumnal ginger look?

You can choose from an endless array of red shades, including soft strawberry blonde, natural-looking ginger and warm auburn. For those wanting a dramatic effect, vibrant red and blazing orange inspired by celebrity styles also work beautifully for autumn.

Can red hair suit every skin colour and hair type?

Yes, red hair is flattering for every skin colour and hair type. There are many different shades and tones available, so you can find one that complements your personal features, whether you want something subtle or bold.

How can you try a ginger hair look without a full transformation?

If you’re not ready for a full-head change, you can add a pop of ginger using face-framing highlights, colourful accents or balayages in autumnal reds and fiery oranges. These low-commitment styles let you experiment with colour and still achieve a trendy seasonal look.

What’s the edgiest twist for autumn hair this year?

This year’s trendiest look features a full head of black or dark brown hair with a bright, bold colour accent. This style delivers a goth-but-glam vibe and is ideal for those wanting something both seasonal and striking, especially for occasions like Halloween.
