17 hairstyles thick hair can handle

Published on 4 February 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Humidity, kinks, disappearance of kirby grips – thick hair life can be tough. There are hairstyles that work your thicker tresses to all their voluminous magic, and they’re right here. Well, 17 of them.

There’s power in a good fringe. Go ‘full’ if your hair is straight in texture, blow dry ‘under’ with a barrel brush to curl, spritz with hairspray and part in the middle for the ‘good kind of curtains’ – think Zoey Deschanel.

The half-up-half-down. Back comb your hair at the root to add height, then take hair from the sides and push up. Hold in place with a clip – slides like this are doing the rounds right now – or a bobble, topped with ribbon. Like school photo day, but grown up.

Thick hair, you were made for the donut/messy bun. Pile to the top of your head and secure with a thick, not thin, band (but you knew that already). Pull from the root to release a little volume, and untuck a few strands to the frame the face. The messier, the better. Like all good donuts.

Give them a try. Or take inspiration from one of these voluminous-haired beauties. We’re in this lots-of-hair thing together.

    FAQs

What hairstyles work best if you have thick hair?

You can try a full fringe, a half-up-half-down style, or a donut/messy bun for thick hair. Each hairstyle helps showcase your hair’s volume and texture. These looks are designed to keep thicker tresses stylish and manageable.

How do you style a full fringe with thick, straight hair?

Blow dry your fringe ‘under’ with a barrel brush to add curl and part it in the middle for the ‘good kind of curtains.’ Use hairspray to keep the style in place. This method creates a voluminous and shapely fringe.

How can you create a half-up-half-down style on thick hair?

Back comb your hair at the root to add height, then gather hair from the sides and push up before securing with a clip or bobble. You can also top it with a ribbon for extra style. This gives a grown-up twist on a classic, voluminous look.

What tips help when making a messy bun with thick hair?

Pile your hair on top of your head and secure it with a thick band, pulling from the root to release extra volume. Untuck a few strands to frame your face for a relaxed finish. The messier the style, the better the look for thick hair.
