Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-laser form of light treatment. An IPL system delivers hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in each burst of light. The powerful burst of light to the hair causes damage to the hair follicle, as the melanin (dark pigment) absorbs the light and heats the hair, thereby removing the possibility of regrowth in that particular follicle. The darker the hair, the more it will absorb the IPL, so the more it will heat up and damage the follicle.
Each hair follicle goes through a growing and resting phase, and each treatment will damage the hair follicles that are in an early stage of their growth phase. This is why repeat procedures are necessary, as not every follicle may be in the growth stage each time we see you. To fully benefit from the effectiveness of our system, 6 –12 treatments are required to successfully damage most of the hair follicles in any chosen area. Treatments are generally 4–6 weeks apart.
