The bannatynes building and health club has more of a leisure centre type feeling to it. The cafe or restaurant has sticky old fashioned carpets and feels unclean and the views out onto the gardens surrounding the building are ruined by a pile of debris of old sofas chairs and other items that have been taken out of the health club. The pool, steam and sauna are extremely basic and changing rooms feel like a council run gym changing area-only with posh wrist bands to open the lockers instead of keys. The actual spa area itself is nice and the relaxation room is also well presented although the client journey upon arrival is less than luxurious. Upon arrival you are greeted by a health club attendant who after checking you in asks you if you would like to PURCHASE a spa bag as bannatynes are so tight they have decided to charge for robes, slippers, towels etc. This spa bag has even gone up in price since I visited in April. Although this is £6 I cannot understand how even a towel or gown cannot be a depositable item or included in the treatment price as it is in other spas that charge similar prices? The whole experience of bannatynes durham before my treatment ruined my experience even though the actual massage was excellent. I won't be booking at this venue again as value for money it is not. They need to have a think about whether they want to be a budget spa or luxury-not advertise and charge as luxury but provide a budget service. Not impressed

Really great visit - great service and great staff; the woman who did my wax was really friendly and made me feel comfortable even whilst being half naked! The hard wax that was used was virtually painless compared to previous strip wax that I have had
