A Relaxing 60 Minute Treatment

With older systems a gel is applied only once and kept on for up to one hour but this used to cause sensitivity during the treatment. With Smile Like The Stars, the procedure consists of between one and three, 20 minute treatments. This helps us to control and monitor the shade of lightening to achieve the required look.

The treatment starts by preparing the teeth. A retractor is gently placed in the mouth to keep your lips away from the teeth. A barrier gel is then placed around the gum line to protect your soft tissue. This whole preparation takes less than 5 minutes. The dental specialist will start the treatment by carefully placing the whitening solution on each tooth. The solution is then activated by focusing a cool blue LED light into the mouth for a 20 minute cycle.

How Teeth Whitening Works

Most of us start out with sparkling white teeth, thanks to their porcelain-like enamel surface. Composed of microscopic crystalline rods, tooth enamel is designed to protect the teeth from the effects of chewing, gnashing, trauma and acid attacks caused by sugar. But over the years enamel is worn down, becoming more transparent and permitting the yellow colour of dentin – the tooth’s core material – to show through.

During routine chewing, dentin remains intact while millions of micro-cracks occur in the enamel. It is these cracks, as well as the spaces between the crystalline enamel rods, that gradually fill up with stains and debris. As a result, the teeth eventually develop a dull, lackluster appearance.
