this was booked as surprise birthday weekend away for my partner. I phoned the spa 5 days prior to our arrival to book treatments (advised 2 days on the booking) however there was no spaces available for any treatment either on the Saturday or the Sunday which was very disappointing. good reception on arrival however the spa was full with children in the swimming pool and all seating reserved with towels. there was 3 young ladies on the reception every time I looked so was unsure why there was no appointments for any treatments. facilities were good and the mud treatment was the saviour for us. Evening meal was great and fantastic service, just shame about the spa element. This is perhaps more a hotel with health club facilities attached rather than a spa as expected.
The facilities were clean and good value for the price of access. The pool is a great size for swimming and was a comfortable temperature. Both the steam room and Jacuzzi were lovely. The staff were also very pleasant.
We did the mud experience. The mud was lovely and left my skin looking and feeling great (I liked that there was different mud for face and body), so it was a nice add-on to the day. We were underwhelmed by the experience itself, given the fact it is not applied by a member of staff - you are left alone in the mud chamber for the duration of the treat and apply the mud yourself. As such, it works better for a social occasion as opposed to a luxurious/pampering one.
The venue had run out of flip flops, which was disappointing as they are rather crucial in a wet environment which can get slippery, and unhygienic when the toilets are located directly beside the showers.
The changing rooms also lacked the typical amenities I would expect from a spa. In my visits to other spas, quality products have been available to use on post-spa skin and hair and complete the experience, and even possibly entice you to purchase – the essentials being shower gel, shampoo/conditioner, makeup remover, cleanser, and cream. However there was only dispensable soap in the shower cubicle, only one working hairdryer, and no conditioner/moisturiser etc. Because of the absence of these essentials and no advance warning of this at booking, after our mud experience we had to have a quick rinse, change into our clothes immediately, and travel home to shower and wash hair. This was a disjointed end to what had otherwise been a pleasant experience. If I were to visit again, I would have to ensure I packed all of these things.
Unlimited herbal teas was a nice touch. Unfortunately there were lots of used dirty cups left around the poolside and loungers by previous guests which had not been promptly cleaned up by staff. This was unhygienic and detracted somewhat from the ambience.
We has a wonderful twilight session using the spas leisure facilities. It was a lovely post Christmas experience, very relaxing. The facilities were clean and the staff are extremely polite and friendly. We will sefinvbe coming back again!
