We keep talking about lockdown’s biggest hair trends – pink hair, buzzcuts, those no-heat curls you do with tights (revolutionary)- but, let’s be honest, grown-out roots are the number one. Whether we like it or not. Embracing them actually looks pretty darn great but, if that’s not your thing, these hairstyles will help to hide them.

1 Messy parting
A straight, centre-parting is Public Enemy No. 1 when it comes to root regrowth, as it brings them straight into focus. A messy parting breaks up that stripe of darker hair, making it less noticeable. It’s easy to do too. When your hair is wet, brush it back and then use your fingers (instead of a brush or comb) to find a natural, less-defined parting.

2 Side parting
Switching to a side parting is an easy win. It moves the roots away from the centre of the face (the area we focus on most). If you’re going for that big, blown-out look, add volume by styling your hair in the middle first. When you flip it to the side, blast the new parting with your hairdryer in the direction you want hair to sit to keep it in place.

3 Waves and curls
While sleek, straight styles are perfect when you’re training your hair, they’re not the best for camouflaging roots. Volume and texture break up the harsh lines of the roots, making them look more blended. Use straighteners or a curling wand to add texture. Not a fan of heat-styling? Try those heat-free curls we keep going on about.

4 Up-do (with lots of volume)
The key to an updo is adding volume. Spray your hair with plenty of texture spray before. If you’re going for a ponytail, tease the hair around your crown then scrape it into a pony. Once it’s fixed with a hair tie, use your fingers to loosen sections. Lift up the top half of your ponytail and backcomb the underneath. If in doubt, just do a messy bun (need that printed on a t-shirt).

FAQs
How can you hide grown-out roots without dyeing your hair?
You can hide grown-out roots by changing your parting, adding volume or creating waves and curls. These techniques help blend the colour difference and draw attention away from harsh lines. A messy parting or a side parting is especially effective.
What hairstyle makes root regrowth less noticeable?
A messy parting makes root regrowth less noticeable. This breaks up the stripe of darker hair and creates a less-defined look. It’s easy to achieve by using your fingers to part your wet hair naturally instead of a comb or brush.
Why is a centre parting bad for visible roots?
A straight, centre parting brings grown-out roots directly into focus. The defined line draws attention to the contrast between your natural hair and the coloured sections. A different parting can help obscure this effect.
How do volume and texture help camouflage roots?
Adding volume and texture breaks up the harsh lines between your roots and coloured hair. Waves and curls are particularly effective because they make roots look more blended and less obvious. Use straighteners, a curling wand, or try heat-free curling methods.
What’s the easiest updo for hiding your roots?
A messy bun is one of the easiest updos for hiding your roots. Adding plenty of volume before styling, teasing at the crown, and loosening sections gives a fuller look. Texture spray can also help create that lived-in, root-camouflaging finish.
