Gents, these are the hairstyles to take to the barbers right now

Published on 8 June 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Summer, hallelujah. Course, we’re still spending our mornings deliberating sunnies vs. umbrella (enough with the mood swings Britain), but one thing’s for sure: it’s an ideal time of year for change. So whether you’re looking to tweak your grooming routine, or fully spring cleaning your style (a little later than most), here’s our picks of male hair trends we expect to see a lot more of. Amen to that.

By Danielle Petch

  • 1 Bleach blonde

The bleach blonde trend, straight out of the 90s, prevails, and Blue Smith and Zayn Malik are probably to thank. This year has seen a rise in more men reaching for the peroxide, because whether you’re sporting a number 2 all over, of you’ve got a bit more length to play with, this shade works on every style. It’s not one for the faint-hearted, and it’ll take some up-keep, but if you’re ready to slide into hairstyle history, this one’s for you. Speak to your stylist for advice on which is the best shade of blonde for your skintone, pre-appointment prep is always advised when it comes to colouring.

  • 2 The disconnected undercut

Think Cillian Murphy, Peaky Blinders. Evolving from the traditional undercut style (longer section on top, shorter back and sides), this is the modern-spin on the Edwardian classic – who knew our predecessors were such hipsters? To stay well and truly in the 21st century, the key to this do is in the ‘disconnection’: a heavy contrast between the longer top and shorter, shaved sides, and a tight fade, or shaved parting for detail. Salt spray, like Aveda’s Texture Tonic, adds dimension to the top section for day-to-day styling. Flat cap optional.

  • 3 The V-shape neckline

Maybe you’ve never thought about the back of your head before (or maybe you have); the V shape neckline fade is the love child of a classic fade and hair design. To achieve, your barber will skillfully shape hair to a sharp point at the nape of the neck – or a little higher – for a sharp finish. There are a number of ways to style the trend, long hair, short hair, even mohawks are adaptable. For the bearded amongst you, this design can be graduated through sideburns, integrating seamlessly with your facial hair. Like geometry, for the face.

  • 4 The organised mess

It can take a lot of effort to look this undone. Luckily, with the right cut and products, the dishevelled locks of Robert Pattinson are easily achievable. The style can be as unruly, styled (or unstyled), as you like. Stranger Things’ Joe Keery has quickly proved that with enough hairspray you can do anything – even fighting gloopy monsters – and still look wonderfully unkempt. For this one, you’ll need a bit of length, so if you’ve recently lobbed off your locks at the hairdressers, you’re going to have to wait a bit. Once you’re styled, invest in texture powder (like this one) to stay styled to (un)perfection.

  • 5 The GI Joe buzzcut

Low maintenance never looked so good with the recent revival of the buzz cut. No longer reserved for your childhood G.I. Joe’s, if you’re looking for a classic style that will have you looking sharp, and give you a few extra minutes of snooze time in the morning (big fans of that over here), then this is the look for you. You can go as close to scalp as you want, although a classic buzz cut will comprise of a barbers number 3 on top, and a 1 or 2 faded into the sides and back (who knew numbers could be so trendy?). There’s enough inspo to peruse online these days. Take a look at Justin Timberlake’s do for inspiration.

FAQs

How do you maintain bleach blonde hair as a man?

Bleach blonde hair needs regular upkeep and professional advice for the best look. Using the right shade for your skin tone and prepping beforehand is important for healthy results. Maintenance includes frequent touch-ups and care.

What is a disconnected undercut and who does it suit?

A disconnected undercut features a strong contrast between long hair on top and short, shaved sides. This style works best when you want a modern, stylish look with noticeable difference between hair lengths. Day-to-day styling is easier with salt sprays to add dimension.

How is a V-shape neckline haircut created?

A V-shape neckline is achieved by shaping the hair to a sharp point at the nape or higher. It combines the precision of a classic fade with a geometric touch. This style can blend with beards using a gradual sideburn design for a seamless appearance.

Which hairstyle is best for low-maintenance mornings?

The GI Joe buzzcut is a low-maintenance option, providing a sharp look with minimal effort. You can choose different clipper lengths, with a number 3 on top and a 1 or 2 faded sides and back being standard. This classic cut also lets you save time each morning.

How do you achieve an organised mess hairstyle?

To get the organised mess look, start with some length and use products like texture powder. This dishevelled style offers flexibility, whether you want your hair neat or purposely unkempt. Hairspray and the right cut make this trendy, relaxed look easy to manage.
