So long, layers – here are 4 ways to pull off the blunt cut

Published on 23 May 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

We’re as loyal to soft, feminine layers as the next millennial, but the blunt cut’s strong entry into the spotlight has caught our attention. That sharp finish is too striking to overlook.

Blunt cuts can make your hair look and feel healthier as they get rid of straggly ends. Sure, it’s a bold style (five words: Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction). But if you’re scared, don’t be. There are different ways to pull it off if you want to play it safer. If in doubt, ask your hairdresser for their opinion.
    • 1 Embrace a cute, chin-length bob

This flatters round and square-shaped faces. If your hair's on the thick side, get your stylist to sneakily chop some vertical layers in. They'll probably call it "taking some weight out". You'll still get the blunt effect, and the layers will make sure your look stays on the right side of voluminous. Our chin length bob celeb idol: Zoe Kazan.

    • 2 Go for a low maintenance blunt lob

Yep – we meant to write lob, not bob. If you're not familiar with this one, it's longer than a bob – and it's flattering on most face shapes. Your hairdresser will remove your ends in one fell slice, leaving strong, healthy hair. So satisfying if your ends are feeling a bit drab or dry.

It's also handy if you've had a long style with ombré ends for a few months and are ready to switch things up. Kim Kardashian's got this style down to a tee.

    • 3 Go bold with a sci-fi bob

Starting short in the back and gradually lengthening towards the chin, the angled bob has been a favourite since Victoria Beckham debuted hers in the noughties. It's made for blunt ends and has a cool, sleek finish. Take inspiration from Bella Hadid. Swoon.

    • 4 Channel the '90s with a curtain fringe

Curtains have evolved since the iconic '90s teenage-boy look (though secretly we wish Nick Carter still covered our bedroom walls). 2018's version is a sweeping, gentle fringe that helps to soften the sharpness of a blunt cut. It looks best parted in the middle and pulled to both sides. Screengrab Kirsten Dunst for the hairdresser.

    FAQs

How can you make a blunt cut suit your face shape?

A chin-length bob flatters round and square-shaped faces, while a lob is flattering on most face shapes. For thicker hair, vertical layers can be added to reduce volume but keep the blunt effect.

What is the difference between a blunt bob and a blunt lob?

A blunt bob is a classic, sharp chin-length cut, while a blunt lob is longer, reaching past the chin. Both styles create the appearance of stronger, healthier hair, but the lob offers a bit more versatility and suits most face shapes.

How do you soften a blunt haircut if it feels too severe?

You can add a curtain fringe to help soften the sharpness of a blunt cut. The modern curtain fringe is a gentle, sweeping fringe parted in the middle that frames your face and makes the overall look less severe.

Why might you choose a blunt cut if your hair feels dry at the ends?

A blunt cut removes straggly or dry ends in one fell slice, making your hair look and feel healthier. This style is especially satisfying if your ends are feeling drab or in need of refreshing.

How do you modernise a blunt bob for a bolder look?

Opt for a sci-fi or angled bob, which starts short at the back and gradually lengthens towards the chin. This approach gives a cool, sleek finish and emphasizes the blunt ends.
