So long, layers – here are 4 ways to pull off the blunt cut

23 May 2018 by Beth Ryan

We’re as loyal to soft, feminine layers as the next millennial, but the blunt cut’s strong entry into 2018 has caught our attention. That sharp finish is too striking to overlook.

Blunt cuts can make your hair look and feel healthier as they get rid of straggly ends. Sure, it’s a bold style (five words: Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction). But if you’re scared, don’t be. There are different ways to pull it off if you want to play it safer. If in doubt, ask your hairdresser for their opinion.
  • 1 Embrace a cute, chin-length bob

This flatters round and square-shaped faces. If your hair's on the thick side, get your stylist to sneakily chop some vertical layers in. They'll probably call it "taking some weight out". You'll still get the blunt effect, and the layers will make sure your look stays on the right side of voluminous. Our chin length bob celeb idol: Zoe Kazan.

  • 2 Go for a low maintenance blunt lob

Yep – we meant to write lob, not bob. If you're not familiar with this one, it's longer than a bob – and it's flattering on most face shapes. Your hairdresser will remove your ends in one fell slice, leaving strong, healthy hair. So satisfying if your ends are feeling a bit drab or dry.

It's also handy if you've had a long style with ombré ends for a few months and are ready to switch things up. Kim Kardashian's got this style down to a tee.

  • 3 Go bold with a sci-fi bob

Starting short in the back and gradually lengthening towards the chin, the angled bob has been a favourite since Victoria Beckham debuted hers in the noughties. It's made for blunt ends and has a cool, sleek finish. Take inspiration from Bella Hadid. Swoon.

  • 4 Channel the '90s with a curtain fringe

Curtains have evolved since the iconic '90s teenage-boy look (though secretly we wish Nick Carter still covered our bedroom walls). 2018's version is a sweeping, gentle fringe that helps to soften the sharpness of a blunt cut. It looks best parted in the middle and pulled to both sides. Screengrab Kirsten Dunst for the hairdresser.
