For me, dewy skin is always on the agenda. So, when images of high-gloss skin started circulating my Instagram feed, I had to find the source. Was it a vinyl facemask? A juicy skin serum? Alas, no – it’s a filter – created by French artist Johanna Jaskowska. No dog ears involved; @johwska‘s filter is cool, and it’s getting ever more popular. So, inspired to get my skin close to just-dipped-my-face-in-vaseline levels, beyond the screen of my iPhone 8, I’m booking in for a treatment. There are three I’d suggest for glowing skin, and they’re explained below. No petroleum jelly involved.

1 Microdermabrasion
The non-invasive skincare procedure has becoming increasingly popular on Treatwell in the last year or so. Microdermabrasion works by exfoliating the surface of the skin with a stream of tiny crystals to lift dead skin cells. Some salons might use a vacuum to suck up these cells (satisfying). In removing the top layer of skin, the body is tricked into thinking it needs ‘repaired’ (kind of like an injury). It’ll work to replace those cells and boom – fresh skin.

2 Microneedling
This is like the technological version of dermarolling. During the microneedling treatment, your aesthetician creates tiny punctures in the skin with super fine needles (0.5-2 millimeters). This triggers the skin into ‘healing’, producing collagen and elastin which ‘plumps’ everything up. The punctures also allow for skincare products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. So if you’re using serums, retinoids, acids, they’re really going to get to work on fixing your skin ‘woes’.

3 Facial massage
If you’ve ever got the gen on Meghan Markle’s skin routine, or stalked @EmmaHoareau to the same lengths as I, you’ll know that facial massage is to thank (in part) for their supple, glowing skin. There are over 40 muscles in your face so, just like the bod, the more you ‘work’ them, the more toned they’ll become. Make it part of your routine – jade roller and all – or book in for a face massage. Your therapist will use techniques to drain lymphatic fluid (and tension) from your face. Super relaxing and your skin looks great afterwards. Perks.
In short: tricking-your-skin thing into regenerated is more or less the secret to glow.

FAQs
What is microdermabrasion and how does it help your skin?
Microdermabrasion exfoliates the surface of your skin with a stream of tiny crystals to lift dead skin cells. By removing the top layer, your body begins to replace those cells, revealing fresh skin. Some salons may also use a vacuum to remove dead skin cells for a satisfying result.
How does microneedling make your skin look more radiant?
Microneedling uses super fine needles (0.5-2 millimeters) to create tiny punctures on your skin. This prompts your body to produce new collagen and elastin, giving your skin a plumper and more radiant look. The process also allows skincare products like serums and acids to penetrate more deeply.
What are the benefits of booking a facial massage?
Facial massage helps tone over 40 muscles in your face and promotes supple, glowing skin. Techniques used by your therapist can drain lymphatic fluid and release tension, leading to a more relaxed feeling and a healthier complexion after your session.
Can you achieve dewy, glowing skin without using filters or petroleum jelly?
Yes, you can get a natural glow through treatments like microdermabrasion, microneedling, and facial massage. These methods help regenerate, plump, and refresh your skin, making it appear luminous and healthy—no filters or petroleum jelly needed.
